We had the good fortune of connecting with Lily Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lily, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was raised on a farm, my siblings and I were the farm laborers. The work was mandatory, but we were always paid. I understood the working life of a dollar at a very early age. I spent my entire childhood scheming on how to get off that farm.
One year, my Dad broke up our local neighborhoods into sales territories and we all bought bushels of apples from my Dad for $2 a bushel and sold them for $4 or $5 a bushel . When I learned how much easier it was to sell apples than to pick them off the tree, the entrepreneur was born.
Decades later, when I could not find conventional answers for my skin problems, I decided to come up with my own.
I had terrible acne as a teenager so when I could not find relief in my early twenties I had to make my own. That is how Lily Farm Fresh Skin Care was started. Everyone at Whole Foods and Natural Grocers wanted to come visit my lab and farm, so we built the Lily Farm Fresh Event Center 30 years later.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We believe Mother Nature is the best cure for Father Time and that Mother Nature is the most powerful force on the planet and we harness her essence in our products.
We make every single one of our products up fresh! We are completely synthetic chemical free! We were the first organic skin care company in Colorado in 1986 and the first skin care company to put “No synthetic chemicals ever,” on every bottle. I am most proud of the fact that our products give amazing results!
I subscribe to Churchill’s words, “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” If you judge your success by maintaining your enthusiasm, than you control your success.
The other thing I am very happy about is sharing our farm with brides. In 2018 we built the Lily Farm Fresh Event Center in Keenesburg, CO and we have nearly 200 weddings.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First I would take them to our farm and laboratory to show them where all the magic happens in making our products. \
Then I would take them across our road the Wild Animal Sanctuary.
I love taking kids to Casa Bonita.
I love the hot springs and the gondola in Glenwood Springs, then head up to eat at the Woody Creek Inn and on to Aspen to hang out.
I would plan it around the Greeley Blues Jam or any Friday night in Greeley in the summer there is live music in there pedestrian mall and “Go cups” permitted so you can walk all around downtown with a beer.
My favorite restaurant is Santiago’s in Fort Lupton, they have great breakfast burritos.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents were responsible for teaching everything I know about work, saving, investing, entrepreneurship, as well as caring about others. My Mom was my greatest cheerleader and helped me immensely with marketing, writing as well as emotional support.
Our employees are the heart of our company and do most of the heavy lifting and hard work.
