We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa and Pete Youngwerth and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa and Pete, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Pete and Lisa Youngwerth owners of Gearonimo Sports “Starting this Gear store we had to put as much work into growing it as we did our kids. We have put our blood, sweat, and tears into this business and are very proud of what it has become. With any business, success does not come easy and we needed to fill our time with thoughts of our new business every day. The stress was crippling often, some days were so relieving to have one or two customers come through the doors. We did understand that if we wanted the business to grow we had to put the work in, and today our minds are at ease. We have been open for just over eleven years, and are able to sit back and look at what we created. We have passed our responsibilities on to our daughters, and they have created a fun and successful workplace for so many people now. It is fun to sit back and watch it grow every year. We are finally able to balance our time off and our time at work, but can leave feeling completely confident that the shop will do okay. We find it very important to balance quality playtime with quality work time. Getting burnt out is very easy to do especially with retail, so finding the balance is crucial in having a healthy work-life. We enjoy our time off skiing, climbing, kayaking, and spending time with each other. We are so happy to be able to work a little and still have time to go do the things that make us who we are! Balance is key to everything in life, fall out of balance and things will not work.”

What should our readers know about your business?
We are a family-owned and operated used gear shop, we have knowledge in all the sports that we carry and we pride ourselves on that! We encourage all our employees to go and participate in the sports that we sell as well, We also strive to carry the largest collection of used gear in Colorado while still holding the gear to high standards. Building this shop up from the beginning was very tough, we started off selling everything we could find from hockey to golf supplies to skis, but we soon found that we needed to focus on what we know best to be able to have confidence in selling the gear. We want people to know that even when times are hard that there are ways to get out and do the things you love and not break your bank. We all deserve to do the amazing things that this world offers.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If we have friends coming into town for the week, we would take them to our shop to get them geared up for climbing or mountain biking, we would have lunch at a local restaurant like The lucky Dumpling. After an amazing day of climbing at Garden of the Gods or Red Rock Open Space, we would enjoy a few beers at any of the local spots( Battle Mountain, or Phantom Canyon Brewery). Then repeat the next day with mountain biking some of the amazing spots that Colorado Springs has to offer like Capt Jacks. There are so many fun new places to explore that are great hangouts downtown as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly, our friends encouraged us to start the business, they are fellow rock climbers Brian Dziekonski and Dan Rodriguez. We were sick of buying our gear at full retail price and so were they. After a few beers, they came up with a name (Gearonimo Sports), and we came up with a business plan! Even eleven years later Dan will walk through the door to go climbing at our gym and will yell ” GEARONIMO” he is proud of the name. Brian is still to this day our go-to guy for any big consulting questions we might have. I don’t know if the shop would have been a success or a business without the peer pressure we got from these two.
