We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa L Ellsworth and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa L, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I am a Physician Assistant/Associate in Oncology. I see patients who have been diagnosed with cancer and those that are at risk to develop it due to family history or genetics. During my 20-year career, my patients have been very interested to learn ways to improve their health. I often get questions about the best diet or what supplements to take.

Due to my desire to learn more to answer my patients’ questions, I have taken many Integrative Medicine courses. Eventually, I completed the Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona and the Integrative Oncology Scholars Program at the University of Michigan.

While I can finally answer my patient’s questions, I am unable to provide my patients the guidance to help them make lifestyle changes during a 30-minute office visit every 3 to 6 months. I know there is more I can do. So, I started my online Integrative Health Coaching practice. Now, not only am I able to provide education to my clients that want it, but I can support and guide them on their healthy living journey.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Lisa L Ellsworth, LLC is an online Integrative Health Coaching practice. As I have 20 years of experience in Oncology, I specialize in helping cancer survivors optimize their health after a cancer diagnosis, during, or after treatment. I use my education in various aspects of lifestyle medicine and my motivational interviewing skills to help my clients create realistic lifestyle goals and then achieve them,

This business model was spurred by the COVID19 pandemic. In my clinical practice, I had to quickly learn to pivot and gain telemedicine skills to continue to care for my patients. The idea of being able to see people virtually opened up a door for me to pursue integrative health coaching online. This allows for work-life balance for me and flexibility for my clients. I can also see clients from all over the United States (and the world).

My business is still quite new so the learning curve is steep. I am quite excited by all the new skills I am learning about running a small business. It has definitely not been easy but I knew it would not be. It requires constant learning, curiosity, and perseverance.

I think it is important for people to know that I am constantly learning about how to keep myself healthy so that I can help others do the same. I truly do practice what I preach.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many great things to do and see here in Colorado. I would always start by taking them to a local farmer’s market. We would get wonderful local fruits and vegetables to have on hand for the week. Certainly, we would enjoy them just sitting on my patio, perhaps with a local brew, watching the sunset over the amazing Rocky Mountains! Purple mountain’s majesty is real indeed!

Given the opportunity, we would check out a sporting event such as the Colorado Rockies or perhaps a concert at Red Rocks. That is one of my favorite spots for live music.

A drive through the mountains for some windshield time is always enjoyable. You never know what you might see along the way. The scenery is beautiful. Might stop in a small mountain town for a quick bite to eat or happen upon a local art or music festival.

The options are endless.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Many people have supported and inspired me along the way. First and most important is my husband. He has supported my need for continual education. He has helped and encouraged me to become a small business owner. His advice and marketing skills have been invaluable.

My family has provided much-needed cheerleading. Friends provide opportunities for brainstorming sessions and mentorship.

Inspiration often comes from my integrative medicine fellowship tribe. I am amazed at the things this group has accomplished since completing the fellowship. It allows me to see all the things possible in healthcare outside of conventional medicine. We are genuinely unicorns.

All the knowledge and skills I have gained from studying integrative medicine at the University of Arizona and the University of Michigan have provided confidence that there was more I could do to help my patients thrive.
