We had the good fortune of connecting with Lolo deHaas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lolo, how do you think about risk?
Before I began to pursue an art career I was a full time skier within the industry (still am just in a different role now). Everyday was test in risk evaluation and commitment. I have had surgeries and injuries that have shown me both sides of pushing the risk factor. I have had injuries that have taken away from my art, but it was also an injury that forced me to take the time to allow myself to delve deep into my artist creations. The risk of becoming a professional artist has been harder in many ways than just making the decision to test a new jump or feature. There is a financial aspect, and a deep personal connection to my “art children creations” which can make putting them out into the world to be critiqued extremely frightening. But risk is a beautiful tool that helps me grow in combating my fear and finding my courage. Without taking risks in life we would stay stagnant and not grow. Everyday I am grateful to have to find my courage throughout my art and push forward into the risk taking realm.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hopefully it would be winter and we would be able to go exploring through the winter wonderland. I would take them skiing at Sun Valley, show them the parks and jumps, and then apres at Apples Bar and Grill. It would be a history lesson of the apres culture. Then we would hike into the natural hot springs, for a lovely dip while watching the milky way above us. We are a dark sky preserve so it especially majestic. I would take them ski touring up around Galena lodge where we would eat after our day. If we could get snowmobiles I would love to take them out to the old ghost town of Custer in the winter to admire how people used to live there all winter long.

We would go ski touring up to the “first ski lift” ever spot in Sun Valley. Followed by drinks at the Duchin in Sun valley lodge where we could see all of the old photos highlighting the rich history of the area.
If there are ski races and big air exhibitions we will definitely watch and cheer on our local athletes.
Last but not least we will eat lunch at the old Roundhouse lodge on Baldy. It is halfway up the mountain and boast amazing views of the Pioneer Mountain Range.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My ski family and team, Elevated Locals, has been such a huge support for me. While I was recovering from a brain injury they really stepped up and helped me make it through each day. Self confidence is a major contributor to having the strength to put yourself out there, and when your brain can’t comprehend what is happening around you it takes a major toll on your self confidence. My team Elevated Locals, most especially Grandma, Miss and Pizza stood by my side and kept me active within the community which in turn bolstered my ability to let my art out there in the world. I also have to credit my sister Amanda DeHaas for being such an amazing critiquing eye that her love of my art is not nepotism. She has been steadfast by my side and is very vocal on her thoughts about what she likes and doesn’t. It has helped me gain even more confidence in what I view as good versus others. I would not be anywhere without the amazing support of these people.
