We had the good fortune of connecting with Mackenzie Ross and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mackenzie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I can’t say there was too much heavy thinking involved, I just felt driven to dive into my photography fully and focus on creating. The corporate world never really jived with my personality and I knew I needed to be my own boss to find fulfillment in my day to day. I was working in retail doing visual merchandising before I started my photography business, along with dog-walking and second shooting events for other photographers, and then I just slowly phased out those commitments as I took on more clients and gigs for myself. It took me about a year before i went full time with my business and I had to be patient with the process so that I could still pay my bills along the way, but it was an exciting goal to work towards.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a creative, my eye and my work really speak a lot for itself. People are drawn to my business because they see the photos I have taken and feel something from them. They like the colors and the expressions and the sceneries, and I work really hard on bringing together my posing and composition and my editing to deliver pleasing photographs. Beyond that though, I think human connection is so important and providing an experience for my clients is what makes them rave about me + keeps them coming back. Beautiful photos are great, but the way you make people feel is what is most special. No matter what happens in my business, I try to always remember that the one thing I have the most control over is how I treat people + what i can give from my heart. Wedding days can be a lot of moving parts and so many different opinions, which can be super overwhelming. I just try to bring a positive and relaxing energy to the day + offer myself in a way that creates trust. My clients have to trust me for me to do my job and create something magical around their story. So, a huge part of my job is holding space for people to be at ease with being who they truly are.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
hmmmm! I enjoy having fun and giving visitors the full colorado experience. we are definitely going hiking somewhere around rocky mountain national park or out west near Breckinridge, and then stopping at a brewery afterwards for a flight. we will probably hit a dispensary or two and then walk around rino or up through the highlands to people watch + be outside. i like taking people to red rocks + convincing them to do a little morning workout with me. if we can snag tickets to some live music or a yoga class, i will add that into the itinerary. & i always just enjoy chatting with the locals and showing the out of towner’s how relaxed + open minded we are here in denver. The outdoors + ambience here are great, but i think the people who live in Denver are so special.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh gosh! I mentored so many photographers over the years who all taught me so much. I am super grateful for all the creatives who allowed me to learn from them and helped me grow my business. Lindsey Boluyt, Andie Avery, Marina Williams, Emily Mathewson- all so talented and willing to share and help me. Also, just really thankful for my friends and family who have morally supported me throughout all the phases of my business and continue to ensure me that I can achieve anything I put my mind to. And my Momma, who isn’t with us anymore, but raised me to be hardworking and tough as hell. All the strong women in my life hold me up and piece me together into the best version of me. Lots of love!
