Meet Madi Moore | Owner/Artist of Crooked Spine Tattoo Studio

We had the good fortune of connecting with Madi Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Madi, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
I am a firm believer in the term “look good feel good.” I will never forget being little, and looking at people with their tattoos, and just thinking to myself how cool they are, and that that’s who I want to be when I grow up. I always knew that I wanted tattoo growing upmin the industry, seeing how they can make people flourish, but once I actually got the experience of a first tattoo, I knew right away that I wanted to be able to share this experience with as many people as I possibly can. that feeling of looking in the mirror and feeling like you are one step closer to being who you want to be. I don’t really get that feeling too much anymore just because I have so many tattoos, but my absolute favorite thing about my careers that I get to see my clients who I love so dearly get that same feeling that I once did.
Being able to help people feel more confident in their own skin is the most rewarding part of my career, and I feel like that is the best thing that it does for community, in the world, I’m making people closer with their true selves. It makes tasks as simple as going to the grocery store, or just getting out of bed every morning 10,000 times easier because you have newfound confidence. I tell all of my clients that tattoos are not about covering anything up, they are about simply accentuating what we have, Showing off the beauty of our natural curves and skin tone, and being able to express who we truly are through art.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I really pride myself on creating a safe, comfortable environment. I feel like a lot of tattoo shops that people walk into, you are instantly hit with negative energy, judgmental, and egotistical vibes. This is something that I’ve seen many artists fall into, that I will absolutely never do. A lot of these artists/Tattoo shops, enjoy body shaming, and turning people down because of their skin tone, or sexual orientation, or gender.
Working with certain curves of the body and skin tones can definitely be a challenge, but who wouldn’t want that? I like to take what makes you you and work with what is going to make you one more confident, and two what is going to complement your curves, skin tones and personalities perfectly.
What I want the world to know about my studio is that you will never be judged for the things that make you you. Those are the things that I enjoy working with and bringing out in people.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my most favorite spots to go are actually up in Denver. I love going to Aurora and eating the amazing Korean and Japanese food that they have there. There’s a dessert shop up there called Snowl that I am absolutely obsessed with. They have the best taiyaki that I have been able to find here. I also love going up to fashion nation in Denver as well, they have the best alternative clothes and shoes. If I am staying in Colorado Springs, you can never go wrong with Manitou! One of my favorite stores is there called Lunicient! You have to go there for all of her beautiful handmade art made with oddities like skulls, and pinned bugs! There is also an amazing cafe called Maté Factor with all fresh, home grown food, and fresh homemade Maté!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a couple people who I would like to shout out, the first one being Shanghai Kate. This was the woman who paved the path for so many artists, especially women. Unfortunately, I never got to meet her, but I had the chance to message her on Instagram right before she passed. I had heard many stories of her, and always looked up to her, and still do. And I have to say that messaging her on Instagram even gave me an insight into all of the stories that I have heard. She was absolutely hilarious, never scared to speak her mind, and just didn’t put up with anyone’s BS. I admire her confidence, and thank her every single day for paving the path.
The other person that I would love to shout out is my dad, aaron moore, he is my mentor, not only for tattooing, but also just life in general. For a single dad, I think he did absolutely amazing, granted he had it easy because I was a good kid, looking back I should’ve made it harder on him lol. But he is such an incredibly talented artist, from his tattoos to his paintings to his sculptures, to the way that he respectfully talks to clients, he inspires me and impresses me every single day!
