We had the good fortune of connecting with Maia Baccari and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maia, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I grew up along the Front Range of Colorado. I spent my youngest years in Berthoud, where my Mom and business partner, Carolyn Hearne started her first retail establishment, Berthoud Mercantile in 1974. I spent many days of my childhood behind the jewelry counter of that store listening to Beatles records on an old turntable. Berthoud is a small town and I always felt connected to the entire community because of the interactions that took place at the shop. My Mom moved her family and her business in 1985 to Greeley. She re-named the business Hearne’s Fine Goods and filled the front room of the old Victorian house that we lived in with fine footwear, clothing and jewelry. We welcomed the Greeley community into our business and our home every day. I believe that small businesses are an intricate part of the local community. They should be a place where everyone feels welcome and at home. I love seeing people I know at the grocery store or out walking my dog. I’m grateful that both my upbringing and my career have created such an enduring and endearing relationship with the Front Range community.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My mother, Carolyn Hearne and I have worked together for over 20 years to build a personalized retail experience. We believe in quality comfort and classic style. We believe that every BODY is unique in personality, build and expression. We want women to feel comfortable and confident in the clothing and footwear they purchase. We want them to have a positive experience that fills their cup. We offer the best in comfort footwear along side European specialty shoes and American and European natural fiber clothing. Our brands include, Birkenstock, Dansko, Naot, Taos, Mentha, Casta, L’ Artiste, Eric Michael, Flax, Cutloose, Tempo Paris and MANY more.

One of our biggest challenges, other than this year of Covid of course, has been the shift to online shopping. We offer an online store featuring several of our products, but it is hard to truly offer a unique personalized experience online. We care so much about how things fit and feel and about getting to know our customers on a personal level so that we can find them just what they need every time. You lose that with online shopping. Luckily we have an incredible community along that Front Range that values small businesses and what we have to offer. I feel grateful everyday to be able to do what I do. I love it!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would absolutely want them to check out several shops in Old Town Fort Collins, Kansas City Kitty, Akinz, Curiosities, Sunday Supply Co, Blue Harvest, The Cupboard, just to name a few! I would take them exploring in some of our great natural areas around town, like Red Fox Meadows and go biking along the Poudre Trail. We could go to a movie at The Lyric and grab some food and drinks at The Exchange. I would have to take them to get cheese at The Welsh Rabbit, chocolate at Nuance and tea at Happy Lucky’s Tea House. Of course there are also fabulous breweries, distilleries and restaurants to enjoy too! Fort Collins has so much to offer!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Mom, Carolyn Hearne has been my greatest mentor, not only in our family business, but also in life. She established her own business in two different towns while raising 4 kids on her own. She never complained about how hard she worked to support us financially or emotionally. She can see humor in almost every situation. She has shown me what it takes to weather tough times, and even be able to laugh through them!
