We had the good fortune of connecting with Mango Johnstone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mango, what matters most to you?
I value offering a top quality service with compassion and depth of understanding. I’m idealistic and curious by nature which inclines me to dig deep to get to the heart of any matter. Whether interpreting an astrological chart and counseling a client—or in the other part of my life, creating a piece of original art—I want to do my part to help raise the bar in both professions. Our contemporary culture puts an abundance of weight on superficiality, quantity and speed. I believe there’s a longing for more than that, so, for me, taking the time to spend time on the work is essential.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
These days most of my focus is on my astrology practice. I love doing in-depth individual readings and working with a broad range of people and circumstances. I’ve also done some teaching  and currently offer one on one tutoring sessions for students of all levels. I find this work very gratifying as I love sharing the storehouse of knowledge I’ve accumulated over 35 years.

Creating art has been a big part of my life since childhood. After high school I briefly attended art school, but felt it didn’t push me enough. The soulful work began when I met my mentor and found the support that makes hard work, practice, and experience come together to make any of us good at what we pursue. Like art, the study and practice of astrology is a lifelong undertaking. Everything we think, feel, and do is reflected in our relationship to the cosmos and I find it endlessly fascinating and informative. Astrology can illuminate and give meaning to our earthly lives and also has great practical application in planning and decision making.

I’ve experienced some complex physical challenges along the way which have deepened and expanded my empathy for my fellow humans and the dilemmas we encounter. I believe that empathy, together with my skills, is what makes my work unique. I love helping others understand and embrace themselves and their journey and find meaning and direction in their lives.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I was born and raised in the Boston area but escaped city life for the wilds of Maine in my mid-thirties. I adore the natural world and the beauty and wildlife that surrounds me. If I had to pick one place to take visitors, I’d choose the Schoodic Peninsula which is the less traveled part of Acadia National Park. If you love the ocean, which I do, you can’t beat its amazing cliffs, rocky beaches, and breathtaking vistas.

Because I live here, I’m inclined to stay away from the most popular summer destinations. For those who do enjoy them, the Bar Harbor Peninsula—about an hour from where I live—offers many shops, restaurants, galleries, and cultural events. I live off the beaten path on a beautiful lake. While much of my consulting work takes place online, clients who come to see me in person get an extra treat as I do their readings on my deck in summer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my Shoutout to my late mentor, best friend, and husband, Magnus Johnstone. He was, by far, the most devoted artist I’ve ever known. He also introduced me to astrology in my early 20s. I was a skeptic about astrology until I met him. His truly brilliant mind helped me open my own mind to all sorts of subjects I wouldn’t otherwise have considered.
