We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Newton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My goal for starting a business was to give myself more freedom. I felt a constant conflict between having time to ski and being forced to work multiple jobs. I spent a few seasons working multiple jobs as a ski coach and server, while pursuing a personal ski career. Starting Alpenglow Ski Academy has allowed me to have a more flexible schedule and pursue personal projects. Alpenglow is an all-online ski coaching platform that allows people to get one-on-one ski coaching at an affordable rate. In my years as a semi-professional skier, I discovered many people who struggled to find affordable and accessible ski coaching. Traditional programs are several thousand dollar and require athletes to travel the country. Alpenglow is a platform that brings the coaching to you. Athletes meet with coaches via video chat and are taught freeskiing tricks and fundamentals. I believe athletes can develop the skills to be competitive skier from any ski hill. Making it affordable helps families overcome the expensive barrier to entry that has been created in skiing. Our goal is to help these skiers develop the skills needed to reach their goals and dreams.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I began working as a ski coach about six years ago. I grew up skiing competitively, so the transition to a coach came natural. After winning a national champion in my senior year of high school, I began to focus less on competition and more on school and a post-skiing career. I started coaching at Woodward Copper and Park City Ski Team while attending the University of Utah. After graduating with a degree in Operations and Supply Chain, I moved to Jackson Hole. I started coaching for the Jackson Hole Ski Club while continuing my personal ski career. Living in Jackson in expensive and I was forced to work multiple jobs to make ends meet. In the summer of 2020, I started to build Alpenglow Ski Academy. Creating this coaching platform as allowed me to have the flexibility needed to have a professional ski career while also making a career as a freeski coach. The biggest challenges have been learning how to market an online company and understanding the needs of potential customers. Building a brand from the ground up has been a learning process, but one of the most rewarding thing I have done.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my friends and family for all of the support over the years. Especially, my dad who has helped me through the process of building a business. A successful serial entrepreneur himself, he has really given me the guidance needed to be successful.
