We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Rosett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, as a parent, what have you done for your children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
As a new parent, the most important thing I’ve done in terms of the impact on my 3-year-old daughter Maren has been getting her outside as much as possible from a very early age. Growing up in a small mountain community in central Colorado, she enjoys participating in numerous outdoor activities throughout the year with her mother, father, dog Lola, grandfather, aunt, cousins, and friends including fishing, hiking, skiing, rafting, swimming, camping, foraging, chasing frogs, and riding bikes. Growing up in Basalt, Colorado we are very fortunate that many of these activities are close to our house or within walking distance, and there is always a fun activity to do year-round.
What should our readers know about your business?
Basalt Fishing Expeditions, LLC (BFE) was formed in 2019, after over 12 years of working for various fly shops, and fishing outfitters in the Roaring Fork Valley. BFE is a small, local, family owned and operated full-service fly-fishing outfitter offering wade and float trips on several rivers, streams, creeks, and lakes in the Roaring Fork watershed. At BFE, we not only strive to make long lasting relationships with our clients, but we also teach them how to respect and value our natural resources like having cold-clear flowing water, wild native trout, and numerous insect species. Additionally, we focus on providing high quality instruction, attention to detail, and friendly service. Nearly all of the fly patterns used on guided fishing trips are custom-tied by hand with the highest quality materials available right here in Basalt, Colorado USA!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area and I wanted to show them the best time ever, I would take them into the backcountry and visit several of the nearby mountain ranges to experience solitude and scenery at its finest. Each season offers a unique experience from cold snowy winter, to windy wet spring, to beautiful bluebird summer, to cool crisp and colorful autumn. Furthermore, there are many opportunities for year-round fishing, and thus we offer fishing trips all year long. We would also go fishing, floating, and rafting on some of our local rivers, streams, and lakes. We would hike, camp, hunt, fish, ski, raft, etc.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First, I would like to thank my parents Randy and Janice for introducing me to the great outdoors when I was a tiny toddler munchkin. My father, took my older brother Jeffrey and I fishing, camping, hiking, boating, and skiing in New Mexico as often as he could when we were growing up. Some of my earliest and fondest memories are from these little family road trips and overnight fishing excursions into the Gila, Jemez, Pecos, and Sangre de Christo mountain ranges in North Central New Mexico. This sparked my interest early on and lit the fire for me, and I have literally been hooked on being outside ever since.
