We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew White and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I just wanted to help people with their questions about legal cannabis. When I first got started in the cannabis industry, people would reach out to me with questions about their new medicine or their new career path all the time. I really enjoyed helping people with their questions, and I was learning interesting stuff every day. I wanted to share all of this with as many people as I could, so I started uploading videos to youtube.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
The thing that sets me apart from others is the same thing I am the proudest and most excited about, I feel like I am helping people. The legal cannabis market is growing larger all the time, and a lot of new people are now turning to cannabis for medicinal reasons. These new patients have a lot of questions, and for someone new to cannabis, there is a lot to learn. I started the Strain Show to help people answer these questions and keep them up to date with all of the new research and products, and I feel like that is something I don’t see others doing. The channel has grown a lot, and I have met some great people along the way, but there were some challenges for sure. The cannabis space on youtube had very little in the way of educational content, so I had to figure out how to get people to watch videos that were slightly different from what they were used to. I had to figure out how to take something that could seem boring, like a medical research paper, and make an interesting and useful video about it, that people would actually want to watch. Despite all of the new research being done, and despite the FDA approving cannabis-derived medications, there are still many negative stereotypes and old-school propaganda surrounding cannabis. I grew up in a place where cannabis was very illegal, and I heard these false stories my whole life. Working in the cannabis industry has shown me firsthand how this plant can help people, and on the Strain Show, I want to show people everything I am learning, and help them navigate this new legal market.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to see all of the great street art downtown from Crush Walls, and hopefully even hit a First Friday Art Walk on Sante Fe. Live music is a must, and no trip to Denver would be complete without a show at Red Rocks, The Black Box, or Cervantes.. Or all 3. We are also hitting the mountains. Being on a mountain top looking out into nature is something everyone needs to do. The aquarium is always fun on a vacation, and knowing my friends we might even end up on a cannabis-themed tour. For food, maybe dinner with a side of live music at Ophelia’s, Ian’s Pizza for a quick slice, or Billy’s Gourmet Hot Dogs. Those are all crowd-pleasers.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to all of the cannabis legalization advocates who have worked so hard to change these outdated laws. These things take a long time to change, and many people have dedicated large chunks of their life to ensure that people have access to safe medicine. We wouldn’t be seeing all of these big changes around the world without all of their hard work.
