We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Brewer Tolson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?

Respect. Respect is one of the most important values to me. I expect clients to value my time and in return I make sure to give the same back. I live by— It’s more than ‘JUST’ nails.

And I mean that in every way. It’s how my clients and I have built our relationships and how 10 years later we are still rocking.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I have been doing nails for almost 10years. I always wanted a ‘style’. I love how certain artists you can just see their work and know they did it. I felt sort of lost in that aspect searching for what my “thing” was going to be and one day it just clicked. Within the last two years I have really found my lane- I specialize in gel and natural nails. A lot of people focus on the outcome and just a pretty set and not so much on nail health and taking care of the nail under the enhancement. I love hearing my clients boast about how healthy and long their nails are, or how their natural nails had never looked so good.

I’ve always had a “thing” I just didn’t realize it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Delaware is small but I love our vicinity to everything, DC is 1.5hrs away and same for Philly. If we were staying local I would love to take a friend to Wilmington for Plant & Sip, maybe hit up a cute boutique in Middletown. Of course in Dover I could give her a bomb gel manicure on her natural nails! Milford has nice trails and parks we could walk with our kids. Milton has the best greenhouse I’ve ever been to and after we would have to go to Lewes for margaritas!
Another 10min drive we would be walking the boardwalk in Rehoboth eating Thrashers!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

My husband. He was born an entrepreneur. Literally haha and from the beginning he has pushed and shown me how entrepreneurship really works. I learn from him daily.

I think I was first inspired to do nails by my sister. Growing up she used to draw these little faces on her nails with a pen. I thought it was the coolest thing and wanted to do the same.

And of course my mom definitely deserves all the credit. She allowed me the time and space to hone in on my craft. None of it would have been possible with her believing in me.
