We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
If you’re anything like me, when Sunday rolls around you are looking to unwind before the start of the new week. Part of unwinding for me includes reading magazines with a glass of wine on the patio, taking a bubble bath with new products, or simply just lighting a candle and watching my favorite Bravo show. I have always had a passion for candles and loved how they could set a certain mood or even bring you back to a certain memory. Growing up, my mom always had candles going. The two that I will never forget are Home Sweet Home + Apple Orchard by Yankee. Anyone else? In 2018, I was determined to teach myself all of the tricks of candle making, but what I didn’t realize was that there were so many toxic products in big box candles. Most of the candles are filled with paraffin, a petroleum waste that releases carcinogenic soot as it burns, potentially causing respiratory issues and cancer. Yikes! I was pregnant at the time and I felt like toxic candles (hi, Target candles) needed to be a thing of the past. That is why all of my candles are clean burning and carefully crafted. The candles are made with 100% pure coconut + soy wax blend, phthalate-free fragrance oils, cotton core wicks, and all of the products I use are made in the USA. The scents are not overpowering; they are meant to provide a subtle scent throughout your space. When you’re looking to unwind, I hope you think of Sunday Candles.
What should our readers know about your business?
Sunday Candle Co specializes in well-designed, cleaning burning, coconut wax candles. Our candles are thoughtfully made using only premium-grade products. We use 100% natural coconut wax, phthalate-free fragrance oils, and cotton core wicks to ensure a safe and clean burn. We do not use any additives such as paraffin, UV stabilizers, or color. Our scents are soft + work well for those that are sensitive to strong scents/candles. Our subtle fragrances are inspired by mountain hikes, Sunday mornings, city adventures, and weekends at the cabin.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is so fun and I absolutely love doing stuff like this in real life! Haha. So, first I would take them to get breakfast and bloody marys at Wendell’s on Tennyson. Then, we’d venture to Evergreen for a hike, stop for beers at New Terrain on the way home and end the day with a pedicure at BaseCoat Nail Salon. For dinner, we’d eat at Tavernetta for some tasty Italian and end the evening with bubblegum ice cream from Liks in Cap Hill.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am so grateful for the support I have in my life! My husband is my biggest cheerleader and is always so supportive, no matter what. My parents also play a huge role in where I am today. At a young age, they taught and showed me that ambition, commitment, and hard work will take you places. Lastly, I want to say thank you to everyone that has liked our page, stocks our candles, and spreads the word about Sunday Candle CO- your support means the world!
