We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Simpson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, how do you think about risk?
I recall an interview with Dolly Parton where she said something along the lines of : If you don’t have anything to start with risk isnt so scary.
I enjoy thoughtful risk. And we are living in a very risky age.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Otherworlds Seed Co. is a culmination of field tested horticultural practice and design aimed towards the average homeowner or renter searching for a way to increase the biodiversity, beauty and habitat of their outdoor spaces. My business partner, Katie Crowley, and I are both 5 generation Denver residents who both dreamed of embracing Denver’s unique ecoregion and unleashing it beauty for all who live and visit here. When I transformed a public garden from a high input formal garden to a curated habitat the reaction from the public was extraordinary. At first people were apprehensive, but as the biodiversity increased the feeling of wonder did as well. I wanted to make that accessible to anyone that wanted to make the leap at their own home.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Bodega for the best breakfast sandwiches, Rocky Mountain arsenal to see the bison and the beautiful habit, a little picnic at the Mount Vernon garden and a walk through the big garden at Washington park. Then happy hour at the hidive.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My business partner, Katie Crowley. All the amazing growers, horticulturalists and laborers that I’ve worked with over the years. Holly Shields and Julie Lehman with the Greenhouse hub for the City of Denver and the Horticulturists from Denver parks: Skyler Smith, Jodi Romaro and Mary Brunet. Kevin Willams and Cory Harris. And to Cassidy and Townes.
