We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Trujillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It’s definitely in my blood. My mom is a hairdresser and former salon owner, my sisters pursued careers in beauty and fashion so I grew up around strong women who made their passion into their careers. Creativity was definitely something that came naturally but makeup artistry was not something I ever saw myself doing. It fell into my lap kind of by accident, I started as a cashier at Sephora and one day we were really understaffed and a lot of people were waiting for foundation matches and I put a brush belt on and have been painting faces ever since. I truly fell in love with how it made people feel.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Makeup is a really intimate art form meets service and finding the balance between the two has definitely taken me time. Everyday I meet people from all backgrounds, age, ethnicities, occasions who allow me the help them get ready for the happiest days of their lives. It’s truly a magical part of my job; to see them smile when they look in the mirror. I’ve made it my duty to uphold standard hygiene practice, continuation of education and open communication with my clients. I’m so proud of my ability to truly listen to my clients needs and have the skills and tools to help them achieve their desired look on their special day. Weddings definitely have a lot that goes into them nowadays and the key lesson every makeup artist should really master is staying calm. Not just for your sake but the client definitely has a lot on their plates and it can ga a long way to absorb some of that stress and be a resource. Another is to give back as much as possible. I want to see all my fellow makeup artist to succeed because if they do then I do! I love all the friends I’ve made along the way and would do anything to see them flourish. I feel like when you give love, the universe has a way of doubling it and giving it back to you.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my bestie was in town for the weekend I would definitely love to drive out to Idaho springs and enjoy the hot springs for the day, then go to Smokin’ Yards for some BBQ. I also have to add The Ethiopian Restaurant on Colfax, Mr.Kim’s out in Aurora and Mon Thai on Santa Fe to the itinerary. A picnic on a beautiful spring day in Cheeseman park is also a must.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As I mentioned my mom plays a huge role in where I am with my career. I’m a first generation Latina and watched both of my parents work very hard my whole life. I think about what role my mom played in the household now that I am a woman and I really aspire to take that roll on in my life too. She not only ran a full service salon but she raised 8 children, and found ways to give back as much as she could to anyone else in need. She’s always believed in me and been my biggest supporter.
My sister Gaby is also such an important person in my life. She’s my ride or die, she’s my one phone call, my better half. Everyone needs a person like her in their life to survive. If you know, you just know.
And I feel like it wouldn’t be fair to not mention all the friends I’ve made along the way who teach me, challenge me to think differently, and root me on. They have given me their time and faces to practice my craft and let me post picture of their gorgeous mugs on my instagram and I’m just so grateful I know so many amazing people that share this borderline obsession with beauty and makeup. Rose, Fiorella, Rosemary, Madz Austyn, you guys forever have a friend in me, thank you for believing in me.
