We had the good fortune of connecting with Miguel Alejandro Ramos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Miguel Alejandro, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I studied math and education, but I have been interested in art my whole life. So I have had two paths in my career. The first as a math teacher, which I consider creative as well. The second path in art, in which I have explored painting, dance, theater, writing and music. Pursuing an artistic career connects me with who I am. It is a way to explore my inner self and manifest my own beauty. Art requires discipline, concentration, contemplation and a world view (perspective). It brings out the totality of your being including emotions and spirituality. Due to a muscular dystrophy condition, my identity has changed quite rapidly over the years. Currently my art is focused on music, painting and writing. I pursue an artistic career because it gives me purpose, community and a way to live with myself and share who I am.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am Puerto Rican and my last 10 years in Puerto Rico I worked as a math professor at a community college. After Hurricane Maria in 2017, I decided to move to the state of Colorado. Here I worked for a short period as a math teacher in a high school, but due to my muscular dystrophy condition, I retired and concentrated on art. The challenges of those early years in Colorado helped me pursue my talents. I started writing and participating in music with friends. I currently belong to a musical group, Aupa, that was born from the meetings between friends for jamming. I recently had the opening of a small collection of paintings in acrylic medium entitled Ancestralía Mía; with the purpose of starting a fundraising campaign with the aim of obtaining an exoskeleton (suit that helps the body move in a computerized way). All this to be able to add more experience to my life with better mobility..

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Colorado has a lot to explore. Some places of interest that I have visited have been: Garden of the Gods, Estes Park, different Hot springs with their respective towns either in Steamboat or Glenwood Springs for example, the city of Denver and Boulder including interesting trails. These places have a lot of variety to eat. Vegetarian or different selection places; like Indian food, Mexican, breweries and even Ethiopian.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My recognition for all of my friends and community that have been support me with throughout my projects or simply because of who I am as a human being. There are many people who have impacted my life, starting with my beloved mother. So i feel very blessed.
