We had the good fortune of connecting with Mischell Cox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mischell, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
The need to always improve on time management and productivity has helped me improve. In my freelance industry, time is something that is taken advantage of and, unfortunately, causes of a lot of preventable turnovers when it comes to getting and keeping clients. I’m glad I learned early to find ways to make good use of my time and be productive.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others – My graphic design style and use of fonts and shapes are different. It used to scare me, but I learned to embrace it and cultivate it.
What I am most proud of or excited about – I am excited about the current career path that I’m on. Taking risks and venturing out is out of my norm, but here lately, I’ve been open to it and the return on that decision has been amazing!
How did I get to where I am professionally; Was it easy? The clients who took a chance on me when I first got started definitely helped me to get to this current place. Their willingness to give me a try, promote my business and encourage others to become a client was and still is phenomenal. No, it was not easy.
How did I overcome the challenges – I took the challenges and opportunities and learned from them. Even though tough customer reviews was hard to hear, it wouldn’t have done me well to ignore them and not try to change for the better. Listening is important to the success of any business.
What do I want the world to know about you or your brand and story – I want the world to know that hard work and integrity are key ingredients to being successful. The original name of my business was Wonderfully Made–it just changed in the past year. Wonderfully Made was created from a place of low self esteem and feelings of underestimation. My current brand (Creativ Freedom) promotes freedom and ideas beyond what others think is possible. I really believe in the impossible but it would be hard to get reach impossibility if you’re stuck in a box. So, with my current brand, I really try to push people out of their comfort zone. That’s where the fun is!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take him to downtown Louisville! We would eat at one of the restaurants on the river, walk the bridge and visit the little local shops. I’d like to go shopping and to the movies.
I love the bridge that connects Kentucky to Indiana! There’s so many places to just relax or have a good time. And downtown is beautiful at night. The lights are colorful, bright and picture perfect.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course! My husband. If it wasn’t for his encouragement, I would still be content with working under my full potential. After graduating college with a degree in Design, I didn’t pursue a career in that field. Instead, I worked at McDonalds for about 11 years. Now, don’t get me wrong, I learned some very valuable leadership skills, but I completely underestimated myself. My husband encouraged me to quit my job and pursue the career that I really wanted.
