We had the good fortune of connecting with MJ Jeffords and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi MJ, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Early on, I knew sitting in a cubicle for 40+ hours a week wouldn’t be an option for me. I thrive when working and connecting with my community, so becoming a hairstylist was an ideal route for me. Doing hair is a passion of mine that started early on in my life, and I’ve turned into a career that has allowed me to express my creativity and take that leap of faith out onto my own to start my own business!

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m MJ, a Denver based blonde specialist that is passionate about all things hair! I’ve been doing hair for almost 10 years, while completing hundreds of hours of continued education after graduating from the Aveda Institute in Denver.
I’m excited to connect with my guests to give them the hair of their dreams, while leaving them glowing from the inside out.
Being a hairstylist is a dream career for me, the connections I make and the work I do inspires me daily.

When I decided to start my own business MJ.HairCo, I was hungry to learn a different side of the hair industry. I wanted to take the reins on my career, and was inspired to push boundaries and take chances through unforeseen circumstances. I decided March 4th, 2023 that I was going to open my own salon suite by summer of 2023. After 2 busy months, I opened on May 5th, 2023 and I have been thriving ever since!
Creating a brand forces you to look within and cultivate a culture consisting of yourself. I dove deep into what I wanted out of my life, my career, for my family, and how I wanted to be perceived to my guests. The culture I want to create is full of love, inspiration and integrity, with creativity and fun sprinkled throughout.
I am a new business owner, so I’m taking in all of the advice and information I can get. I believe that you never stop learning, and inspiration can be found anywhere if you’re open to it.
I’m elated to know that my hard work and dedication to this, as well as my support from family and friends, will push me into the amazing unknown, and I cannot wait to see how it unfolds.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend who was visiting town, we of course would start in Denver! I’d head over to Humboldt Kitchen + Bar for happy hour to enjoy their famous Humboldt martini, then head over to the highlands to grab a bite at Linger.
I’d spend a morning heading up to hike in Boulder near flagstaff, right after picking up a breakfast burrito from Gomez Burrito. We would then head back down to enjoy brunch in Denver at Bacon Social House, then spend our day walking up and down the art district of RiNo, enjoying a coffee from Crema, and a croissant from Izzio Bakery in Denver Central Market.
With coffee in hand, I would head back to west Denver and take a stroll around Sloans Lake, eat an early dinner at the Edgewater Marketplace, and finish our night with a concert at Red Rocks.
I have lived in Denver my whole life, and I still find something new to explore everyday, so I’d enjoy trying something new with them too!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to thank my parents, Wes and Pam Jeffords for always allowing me to express my artistic side and encouraging me to chase my dreams, no matter what the cost. The sacrifices they have made in their own lives to ensure that I could flourish into what I have become today will always be a “why” for me.

The mentorship I received from Melissa LaPerriere at Salon Nové molded me into the business woman & stylist I am today and I am very thankful for the role she played in my life and career!
