Meet Money | Author, Rapper & Multi-Media Hyphenate

We had the good fortune of connecting with Money and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Money, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was born into creativity. While some are born into creative families, so they’re more so bred to be a creative, I was born into a love for it. More so, I’d say I was privileged to be raised by a mother who never stifled the creativity I had – privileged because not everyone has that luxury to explore their creativity from a young age. Naturally, I loved writing and I became a poet from a young age and when it came to making music, I was surrounded with mainly hip-hop music and music videos as a kid so I gravitated towards that and the music I’d hear in the Egyptian movies. It felt natural to listen to music until it felt natural to make it as well.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When it comes to the art I’ve made it’s always so difficult to talk about one thing because it’s all intersected. Listen, I’m a Pisces – and yes, I’m touching the astrology side and Pisces are those natural emotional beings but seriously, all of my art forms from my poetry to my music to my podcast to my journalism all carries the same root of a love for writing. Because of that genuine love for this craft and a true authenticity it’s really hard to ever go wrong.
When you consume my art it’s just so real. It’s so bona fide that it bursts off a page or through your speaker and I love that. All of my art and content up until now has been made by family and friends, which has always been so crucial to me. It allows me to genuinely credit keynote performances like New York’s SOBs to the help of my manager and long-time friend/family, JD, and I can physically publish and print dedicated poems and words to others in my life on the same caliber because they were there. Their imprint is on me, therefor it is on my art because, who am I if not a reflection of the people I keep around me?
I continue to learn and grow in this industry day by day truly, living in New York allows for a great amount of networking events and opportunities and I think certain rooms are definitely showing up as the “ones to be in.” I’m just constantly trying to better my brand and build authentic community.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I had to do this twice with my best friends Sabrina and Shantal, but we’re the type to find events that correlate with the trip; especially Sabrina. So we’ve been to a KAYTRANADA set at Brooklyn Mirage which overall is a cool party spot, lots of dope events. Definitely a trip to Central or Prospect park if the weather is nice, I feel like the scale of NYC parks is surprising to people from other cities. Museums are cool if you’re into that, I personally would take my people to The Whitney, The MoMA or The Met. Washington Square Park on the weekends when it’s nice out, sight to see and if you know, you know. You can skip Times Square unless it’s like 3AM and you’re a little drunk because trust me, your New York resident friend is not enjoying it.
In terms of food there’s so many options in so many boroughs and I honestly have discovered more spots when my friends visit then ever before but definitely grab a good NY slice of pizza; doesn’t matter where, as long as it’s good. I try to take my friends to cuisines they don’t have much of, if at all, back home so I take close friends to this cozy Egyptian spot on Steinway called Mombar; authentic doesn’t begin to describe it – ask the chef/owner anything and he’d be happy to talk!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To my mother, who is owed the world and then some. To my chosen family, thank you for sticking beside me and supporting me to the world’s end. To Scorpio, for being a beacon of support and love from the moment our paths have crossed.
