We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Bradford and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erin, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I am an artist because I believe in the power of storytelling. Through stories and experiences we shape our understanding of the world around us. The media we consume through the news, on social media, while going to the movies, etc all have a hand in creating the unique lens through which we view and relate to our neighbors. As artists and storytellers, we have the power to change the narrative, amplify underrepresented voices, and make the world a better place.

I strive to create art and space for opportunity that encourages people to feel seen, heard, and hopefully a little less alone.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Any success I have had has come from my community aka (the dreaded word) ~Networking~

As an actor, I used to think that meant I needed to figure out how to meet the MAJOR players- that I would need to rub elbows with the Meryl Streeps and the Robert DeNiros of the industry. While that would certainly help, I think a lot of actors misunderstand the point of “networking.” To me, networking is about building a community. It’s about doing good work where ever you go, being reliable within your circles and putting yourself in new circles to make new friends. The best opportunities come from someone who “met you in a class that one time” recommending your work to a friend because they are looking for the lead in their next indie film. True artists are always creating and looking for collaborators. This industry will be incredibly lonely if you are trying to climb to the top by yourself.

About four years ago a silly idea popped into my head for a TV show called, Plant Moms. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to do it alone so I asked two of my best friends to write the show and create the brand with me. As newbies, we had countless writing sessions, script readings with friends and meetings with mentors to help figure out how to make this happen. I knew we had something and I was determined to see it out. We launched a fundraising campaign and were met with so much love and support from our friends who wanted to help us make the show a reality. However, the fundraising process was extremely difficult. We had hundreds of donors but still weren’t hitting our fundraising goal. One of the creators was talking about the fundraiser in her office at a major Broadway Marketing company and a producer overheard. He came over and immediately got behind the idea. He then introduced us to our incredible, accomplished director who also became the executive producer on the show. Suddenly the little show we were going to film on our friend’s camera joined a completely different league. I can’t wait to share what’s next for this dream.

I believe that success comes from passion, luck, and determination but it is built on a strong foundation of community. My best advice for anyone trying to build a career in the arts is to nurture the community they are currently in. We must leave space for that community to grow but never at the expense of the people who are your foundation. We are nothing without our community.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There is no better way to start a morning in NYC than with a fresh bagel. I can confidently say that Bo’s Bagels in South Harlem has the best bagels in NYC (Yes, I’ve tried many). They have tons of flavors, sandwiches and even various vegan cream cheese options.

After Bo’s you’ll want to take a walk through Central Park. The NorthWest end of Central Park is stunning and there are very few tourists. You’ll be able to walk through the north wood, take a walk through the stunning Conservatory Gardens and check out the views of the reservoir.

Then head on over the the MET art museum. This famous museum is home to some incredible art AND iconic movie moments. (Hello When Harry Met Sally) It’s a great place to get lost and enjoy the scenery. Be sure to check out the views of the roof before you leave!

Next you’ll want to take the train downtown for dinner at San Marzano.. This inexpensive restaurant is nestled in the East Village and has delicious homemade pastas. I will forever sing praises of their Pear and Gorgonzola ravioli.

As the sun is going down, it’s the perfect time for dessert! I highly recommend grabbing a scoop of ice cream at Van Leeuwen and wandering over to Washington Square Park. This park thrives at dusk with lots of people from all walks of life enjoying the evening.

The best views of NYC are in Brooklyn. So a trip to NYC would not be complete without visiting Dumbo. I recommend taking the train down to Fulton street where you can walk across the Brooklyn bridge. Next you’ll want to grab some coffee at the Brooklyn Roasting House and walk through the charming streets of Dumbo and Brooklyn Heights. The views of the city along the water are unmatched. Be sure to check out the Time Out Market for something to eat. It is home to many pop up locations of NYC staples such as Clinton Street Baking Company, Jacob’s Pickles and more. There is a great flea market under the bridge on weekends and outdoor activities like rock climbing and roller-skating.

Chelsea is also a must for me. Chelsea Market is an iconic tourist spot with so much great food and cool shops to take in. Next, you can walk over to the Whitney museum where you’ll be able to take in the exhibits in about 1-2 hours. The museum is situated at the south end of the High Line which is a park built along an old elevated train track. I love walking along the High Line. The views are beautiful and there are always intriguing art exhibits on display throughout the walk. The highland will take you up to midtown which is the perfect stop to see a show and get those Time Square selfies.

NYC is thriving with culture, art and incredible food. A trip would not be complete without seeing a show and taking in one of the incredible museums.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out my mom, Laura Bradford. She is a USA Today Best Selling Author and has published over 35 novels. She instilled in me the importance of storytelling and following your dreams. I wouldn’t be who I am without her.
