We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks is probably the thing that has taken me farthest in my life and my career. Results I have gotten from risk taking have surprised me and brought things into my life I only thought I could dream of. I can’t get enough new experiences, meet enough new people, or learn enough new things. I think the most growth can be acquired in uncomfortable positions. When you take a big risk you are opening yourself up to big reward. If things don’t go according to plan you can always pick yourself back up and know that you gave it a shot. Im proud of myself even when I take risks and I fail because I was brave enough to at least try.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I used to absolutely hate my art. I have been writing and making art as long as I can remember. I always wanted to attend Savannah College of Art and Design but ended up choosing a more traditional path out of high school. I quickly knew that I was not cut out for a 9-5 and that I was meant to create and connect. I experimented with all mediums of writing forms and art. My first love was charcoal and pencil sketching. I love the way the textures felt on my hands. I never had much confidence with paint so I tried abstract designs but they never felt like much of anything to me. When I moved to Denver, I was inspired by all the diversity that this city has to offer in terms of what is considered art. I wanted to create everything at once so I dove into mixed media collage art. I had sketches and charcoals from 10 years prior stock piled and canvases of abstract art I never truly connected with until I started using them as backgrounds. I then started incorporating old poetry, notes to self, and magazine clippings I had always kept. My pieces went from being what in my eyes always seemed to be dull and incomplete to exploding with color and emotion. I always thought to be an artist you had to master one aspect but mixed media and collage art has allowed me to appreciate the imperfectness in the things I create as well as allowed me to create outside the box of what I thought art had to be or look like. Art is expression. To me it doesn’t matter so much how I am express myself through art , as long as I am expressing.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting I would have to take them to my home away from home, The Black Box. I also work in the music industry and am fortunate to have found a home in my favorite underground music venue in America. I am not big on flashy. I like to be where there is great local music, good people, and lots of laughter. If I am out you can normally find me there listening to some of my favorite artists even when I am off. I would also have to take her to Gypsy House on Broadway. The environment there is my favorite for a cozy conversation. There are crystals, plants, books, and friendly conversations all around… what more could you want for a lunch date with your bestie? Before she left we would have to head to RiNo to do an art walk. Denver has some insanely talented artists and mind blowing murals. Sending pics long distance would never do them justice. I would need her to see them for herself.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give credit to my success to my support system. My family has gone through the trenches with me in a lot of ways while I struggled to figure out who I was in the world. Without their unconditional love and support I would have never had a shot at getting where I am today.
