We had the good fortune of connecting with Nancy Swanton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nancy, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Having my own business makes me happy. I love seeing what my customers have created and helping them in their endeavors. Doing something I love is the best experience.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always been attracted to bright, cheerful colors. My quilts reflect modern fabrics in traditional and original patterns. I began quilting over 25 years ago, and opened up my own shop in 2004. There are many challenges associated with owning a small business; among those are budgeting, managing & inventory control. One of the lessons I’ve learned along the way is that there is no way to predict the ups and downs in the retail industry and you can’t buy everything you love. Budgeting is important! What sells today may not sell tomorrow.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Denver area has a plethora of attractions, so it’s not east to decide. A trip to Red Rocks amphitheater is a must as well as the Royal Gorge Bridge, Pike’s Peak and Garden of the Gods. Lunch at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park would be on the list, and perhaps a cocktail or two at the Brown Palace. Depending on the season, a Rockies, Broncos, or Nuggets game would be fun too.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The book: Glorious Quilts by Kaffe Fassett started me on my journey. The designs were simple but the fabrics were fantastic. If you have wonderful fabric you don’t need complicated patterns. Kaffe Fassett is the leading designer in the industry so he doesn’t need a shout out. He has been the greatest influencer in the modern quilting world for over 60 years.
