Meet Nikolai Puc’ | Photographer, Humanitarian, Plant Dad

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikolai Puc’ and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nikolai, how do you think about risk?
My career has been built on taking risks and embracing the unknown. I have always lived by the philosophy: “If you never ask, the answer is always no.”
In high school, I was obsessed with music but could not afford to attend many concerts. During my senior year, I had an idea to ask bands if I could photograph their shows as a way to get in for free. That one bold question changed the entire course of my life.
At first, I faced constant rejection, but a few smaller bands gave me a chance. From those early shoots, I built a portfolio that opened more and more doors. Soon after, I was photographing for my university’s arts magazine and contributing to Rooster Magazine in Boulder. Now, nearly a decade later, I am proud to say I have been shooting live music in Denver ever since, all because I sent a DM to a band back in high school.
The fear of rejection is something every creative faces, and I am no exception. But I have learned that asking, no matter how scary, can change everything.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
From the moment I first pressed the shutter button at twelve years old to where I am today, my journey as a photographer has been one of constant growth and discovery. Over the years my understanding of posing, lighting, and drawing out true emotion from my subjects has deepened, while the nervousness and uncertainty I felt in the beginning have slowly faded. I am most proud of how I have developed the ability to be directive with clients. This is something that sets me apart because many people step in front of a camera unsure of what to do or how to carry themselves. By offering clear guidance I am able to instill confidence, which not only makes the experience more enjoyable for them but also results in stronger and more authentic images.
Getting to this point was not easy. Like many artists, I faced rejection, self-doubt, and the fear of failure. What helped me overcome those challenges was embracing the idea that growth often comes through trial and error. I made it a point to try different styles, explore new techniques, and push myself outside of my comfort zone. Sometimes I failed, but those failures became lessons that shaped me into the photographer I am today.
What I want the world to know about me and my work is that my story has always been built on connection, confidence, and risk-taking. I believe photography is about more than just creating images; it is about creating trust and giving people the courage to be seen. My brand is rooted in that belief, and it is what continues to inspire me as I grow both as an artist and as a person.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I absolutely love Denver and all it has to offer, so if a friend were visiting, these would be my must-see, must-eat, and must-do recommendations:
Food
Redeemer Pizza – In my opinion, the best pizza in Denver with fresh ingredients and a unique twist by using sourdough bread
Domo – A hidden gem that feels like you’ve been transported to Japan, both in the food and the beautiful garden setting.
High Point Creamery – Two Things. Churro & Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. Your life will change forever.
Sightseeing and Experiences
RiNo District Murals – A must for art and culture lovers. The street art here is constantly changing and makes for the perfect walk.
Red Rocks Amphitheatre – Nothing compares to seeing live music here. It is one of the most iconic venues in the world and a true Denver experience.
The Gothic Theatre – For a more intimate concert setting, this venue has a character and charm that showcases Denver’s live music scene.
Millennium Bridge – The perfect spot to take in the feel of downtown Denver, especially at sunset when the city lights come alive.
Shopping and Collecting
Wax Trax Records – A vinyl lover’s paradise and one of the best record stores in the country. A true vintage, brick and mortar store, their selection is incredible, and I can easily spend hours here.
South Broadway Vintage & Thrift Stores – Broadway is lined with unique vintage and thrift shops that are perfect for treasure hunting. Every shop feels like a new adventure.
Dirt Cheap Tropicals – A must-stop for plant collectors like me. They always have something rare, beautiful, and healthy to add to any collection.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes, I absolutely need to give a huge shoutout to my amazing mother for shaping my love and passion for photography. She has been both a photographer and an educator for as long as I can remember, and I truly feel blessed to have been raised in what I call a “photography household.” While some kids grew up surrounded by sports or music, I grew up surrounded by cameras, prints, and countless stories told through images.
From day one, she was my greatest teacher. I watched her pour her heart into her work, whether it was behind the camera or mentoring others, and I was constantly inspired by the way she saw the world. Little by little, she passed her knowledge on to me, not just technical skills, but also the patience, creativity, and perseverance that come with being an artist.
Now, all these years later, I am incredibly lucky to continue learning from her while also working side by side with her every day. It is such a rare gift to be able to share a career and a passion with your own parent, and I know I would not be the photographer I am today without her influence, encouragement, and example.
