We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Calomino & Caitlyn Abeyta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel & Caitlyn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process was fairly simple and not complicated. We knew it was a matter of when, not if. Sometimes the hardest part of making a change in your life, especially something this big, is just deciding to go for it. Once we made that decision, the rest was figuring it out as we went.

Aesthetics is our passion, our obsession, our career, and our creative outlet all in one. It’s something we’ve lived and breathed for years, and after gaining extensive experience working under someone else, we knew it was time to do things our own way.

We were already confident and skilled practitioners, but we wanted the freedom to foster our own community, build our own clientele, and offer only the services we truly believe in — delivered in a way that feels elevated, intentional, and refined.

At a certain point in your career, the treatments become second nature — and the natural next step is to create something of your own. For us, it wasn’t just about business ownership. It was about building a brand and a space that reflects our values and vision, and creating a culture around aesthetic medicine that feels modern, inclusive, and connected.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re so thankful for where we are today. As business partners, we have over 15 years of combined experience in aesthetics, and after working in other medical aesthetic clinics for years, we’re proud to be approaching our one-year anniversary at Hourglass this July.

Has it been easy? No. In fact, we’ve faced a lot of backlash — from former colleagues, a previous employer, and even people in our personal lives who we once considered our supporters. Sometimes, when you make the choice to do something better for yourself, it reveals who around you doesn’t actually want better for you. Jealousy can hide in strange places. But despite the adversity, judgment, and people trying to cast doubt on us, we’ve stayed true to our vision.

When we were first considering making the leap to start Hourglass, our medical director told us something that really stuck: “A business is like a marriage and there will be people in your life who won’t be able to handle what you’re setting out to do.” He was right. But we stayed the course.

We went into this knowing we’d be working long days, late nights, and pouring everything we had into our vision. We’ve had unexpected challenges and moments of doubt. We have faced the grief of losing people who couldn’t support our new journey. But the one thing we’ve never lacked is commitment. From the very beginning, we’ve shown up with consistency and discipline — working nearly seven days a week during our first year to build something that reflects who we are and what we believe in.

That mindset mirrors the work we do with our clients. In aesthetics, lasting results come from structure, repetition, and patience — you can’t go to the gym once and expect abs. It’s the same with skin regeneration, facial contouring, and transformation. It takes dedication, and we live by the same principle in our business: stay consistent, stay focused, and the results will come.

If there’s one thing we want people to know about Hourglass, it’s that we’re not just here to just do pretty things (even though of course we love that part). We’re here to create real, lasting change — in the way people feel, the confidence they carry, and the relationships they build with themselves. We’re building something that’s rooted in trust, intention, and results and we’re just getting started. We are always here for our clients. Their big moments, their happiest days, and the sad times. The brand is aesthetics, but its also love, community, and health.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We love this question! If our best friend came to visit for a long weekend, we’d definitely start at Hourglass — not for lip filler and Botox right away — but to show them the space, soak up the mountain view, and treat them to a quick Glow Up Facial to get their skin weekend ready. We’d also give them an NAD+ and NAC injection, which is our little pregame ritual to boost energy, clarity, and recovery before a night out. The goal is always to help them feel radiant and reset before the weekend even begins.

From there, we’d head straight to Matsuhisa in Cherry Creek — our favorite dinner spot in the city. It’s meaningful to us because we spent so many evenings at Matsu before Hourglass ever opened, dreaming up what would eventually become our business over sushi and cocktails. It’s luxe, cozy, and always hits the mark.

We’d plan a mountain escape with Caitlyn’s dog, Luna (the sweetest Italian Greyhound), for a little nature and a full self-care reset. We love heading to Iron Mountain Hot Springs or the Yampah Vapor Caves in Glenwood — the perfect detox after a night at Matsu. Staying at the Denver Hotel is our go to for the histortic but refined feeling. We’ll layer our hair in oils, apply our favorite iS Clinical face masks, and just soak in the minerals. It’s a reset for your skin, your body, and your soul.

On Sunday, we’d ease back into the city with a slow morning — maybe a Pilates class and some red light therapy, followed by a fresh juice and a stroll through one of our favorite local spots like the Pearl Street Farmers Market or the Highlands Farmers Market to stock up on produce and niche finds. If we had time, we’d stop in for a birth chart reading with Sorita on 6th Ave or wander through the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall for something unexpected and fun.

And before our bestie heads home, we’d swing back by Hourglass for a little finishing touch — lip filler, a tox refresh, or even some subtle facial balancing. Just something to bring the weekend full circle and send them home glowing.

Good food, fresh air, skincare rituals, and your favorite people — that’s our version of the perfect weekend in Denver.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We didn’t have much mentorship when it came to business coaching or upward growth while working in the field of aesthetics. In fact, some of our hardest lessons came from navigating the industry firsthand — often by observing what not to do. That experience taught us that you can’t always rely on others to show you the way. And that’s okay. It pushed us to trust ourselves, lead with integrity, and stay committed to doing things differently. Those challenges became part of our foundation — and now we’re building the kind of supportive, empowering environment we once wished for.

That said, during our training and education in aesthetics, we were lucky enough to learn from someone who truly shaped us both: Jeannie Scurlock. She’s a fearless woman who taught with grace, skill, and a deep sense of confidence. In this industry, it’s not uncommon to encounter people who lead with insecurity — who gatekeep knowledge or approach others with judgment rather than support. Jeannie was the opposite. She led by example, created a space of encouragement, and helped us believe in ourselves from the very beginning. Her mentorship went beyond technique — she showed us what it means to lead with love and empowerment. We admire her deeply and are forever grateful for the role she played in our journey. She’s a true role model.

We also have to give the biggest shoutout to our families. Our parents raised us with strong values, unwavering integrity, and the belief that we could do anything we set our minds to. They’ve always shown up for us. From a young age, we were taught that the sky is the limit, and that as long as we stay true to ourselves and where we come from, we can achieve anything.

Many people think we’re sisters — we’re not — but we may as well be. Those values have deeply shaped how we show up as both best friends and business partners. We treat our clients the way we’d want our own mothers, sisters, and best friends to be treated: with honesty, care, and real connection.

And of course, we owe everything to our clients — for trusting us, supporting us, and allowing us to do what we love every single day. You are the heart of what we do, and you mean the world to us.
