We had the good fortune of connecting with Ray Mirzabegian and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ray, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My business was born out of necessity. Ten years ago I found myself desperately searching for a product that could potentially save my daughters life. You see I have a special needs child who has a severe form of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome. She started having seizures at 5 months old, and by the time she was 9 years old she’d had over 20,000 seizures. Unfortunately all available medications had failed to control her seizures and we were at a point where we were looking into hospice care for her. She was about 10 years old when a documentary was aired on CNN by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, called “Weed” part 1, and in this documentary he featured another child with the same exact diagnosis and condition as my daughter whose name was Charlotte Figi. The documentary showed how her mom had been giving her CBD oil and it had almost completely stopped her seizures. CBD is a cannabinoid and a component of the HEMP / Cannabis plant. In fact it’s the non psychoactive component which means it doesn’t make you high. Well right after seeing this documentary I started searching for CBD oil in California. It was 2012, and there were hundreds of dispensaries in California and I went to almost all of them. But I failed miserably to find this potentially life saving natural medicine for my daughter. It just didn’t exist in California at the time. I at the time was teaching a opticianry program at The American College of Opticianry. I had zero knowledge of Cannabis or cultivation or manufacturing etc. But I had no choice, I had to try to save my daughters life. I quit my years long career and started cultivating and manufacturing CBD oil and sure enough it saved my daughters life and many others whom I helped after that. Today my daughter Emily is 18 years old and had a decent seizure control and a much improved quality of life. Over the last decade I built a very successful company and business in the HEMP CBD industry where I manufacture and distribute multiple lines of products nationwide. In addition I have retail CBD Boutiques and a Cannabis cultivation and manufacturing facility in California. Saving my daughters life and the miraculous outcome was the reason behind my business and it’s success.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The answer to my first question answers many of these questions.

Because my business was born out of necessity to help this community, I always stayed true to exactly that. To keep helping this community. A big part of what we’ve done and still do is to form a community and foundation to help these kids and families. I formed a non profit in California called The Realm of Caring Foundation in 2014 where we started fundraising to sponsor families and their medicine and gave grants to families to move to cannabis legal states and most importantly documented and collected a lot of observational research data. I started teaming up with doctors who were open to the idea of this alternative therapy and we co sponsored many educational events across the state. I stood in front of multiple cities council and townhalls and presented my daughters case and educated them on the science behind this cannabinoids. I and my colleagues presented at the state capital asking for laws to allow for safe and legal access, etc..

What sets my business apart is passion. Passion for the cause and the reason behind why I even started this business to begin with. My passion to help this community is the key ingredient to my success, and I’ve worked very hard to prove this to them. This passion and the purpose, has allowed me to look for and qualify the best options and players in the industry to team up with. To manufacture high quality, consistent products that meet and exceed guidelines that aren’t there yet or regulated by any governing agencies. I am very proud of the reputation I’ve built in the cannabis and CBD industry not only here in California but internationally, as my and my daughters story have been featured and published in documentaries and docuseries by Time Magazine and National Geographic and many other media outlets. I am proud that parents and clients from many countries around the world reach out to me and see my coaching and assistance and they put their trust in me. I am excited for the future because the industry is in it’s infancy even as saturated as it seems. The laws are and will catch up soon. The legal landscape will change federally and it’ll present opportunities to help so many more folks nationwide or in other countries.

It’s been a very hard and challenging journey so far. In the beginning I was constantly forced to move and was running from the law because it didn’t exist. I had challenges in banking and insurance and every other resource that a business need to run smoothly didn’t exist for our industry. Not everything has been resolved even now but we are making progress. With all this challenges I still stayed resilient and kept getting back up and expanding and moving up. I have launched several brands and assisted in many others. These challenges made me strong. I had to take a lot of risks. Some that would impact my personal and family life and finances. Some that would or could cause me legal problems. But helping these kids was the number one priority and I was not going to leave them hanging at this point.

My story is a google search away. A lot has happened in 10 years. I’m proud of it all.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I definitely would take them to spend a couple of days at my cabin in Lake Arrowhead California. Across from the private lake in the woods, we would experience old town and old times America in the small town and have dinner at small family owned taverns up there. We would get on the lake and swim in the clean cold arrowhead spring water and come back. In addition I would take them to the beach either in San Diego Oceanside, or Huntington or Manhattan beach. Spend a day or two by the ocean would be great. Finally I would definitely spend a day at my house with my big Armenian family and have a feast with good food and drinks and music with the family.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely. Over the years as I’ve faced so many challenges in this industry, there have been many that have inspired me to stay resilient and keep getting back up and going on. These real life heroes whom I’ve been blessed to meet and be a part of their life and healing journey are many children who are suffering from neurological conditions such as epilepsy and autism. It all started with one however and she’s my muse. she’s my real life hero and she’s my daughter Emily. She and her strength and resilience and willingness to fight and get better has been all the influence I needed on a daily basis and I owe all my success to her. She has overcome so many traumas, injuries and broken bones, and she still smiles every chance she gets and tries to live a happy and content life.
