We had the good fortune of connecting with Sally Kuzemchak and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sally, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was already a successful freelance writer focusing on nutrition and a registered dietitian. Then I had two children and realized that feeding kids was a lot harder than I ever thought it would be. When I went online to seek solace, I found that many blogs written by fellow dietitians made it sound easy. Too easy. All of my mom-friends were struggling. Even with a bunch of fancy initials after my name, I was struggling too. I decided to start my blog, Real Mom Nutrition, to pull back the curtain, to show other moms that it’s normal if your kids don’t like kale or seem to exist on buttered noodles. I wanted to share my successes and my struggles around feeding my family and build a community where moms could feel understood, supported, and never judged.

What should our readers know about your business?
I created Real Mom Nutrition in 2009 to counter the “perfect” narrative I was seeing online at the time around feeding kids. I took risks and told the truth, which was embraced by my readers at a time when social media was new and most businesses were presenting a more polished, unblemished facade. I grew my blog steadily from two readers (my husband and mom) and expanded Real Mom Nutrition to include work with brands and authoring two books. The blogging world is crowded and competitive, but I think by being honest and unpretentious, as well as using the skills I’d learned as a freelance magazine writer about creating content that’s relevant and interesting, I was able to stay in the game and have a thriving business.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shout-out goes to the Real Mom Nutrition community of moms, who I connect to through social media, blog comments, emails, and occasional grocery-store run-ins (usually when I’m looking my worst). They share their stories, struggles, and best recipes with me and the community and create a positive environment where other moms can feel safe and supported.
