We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Carbia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Things that make me happy are Family, nature and creativity! Family keeps me motivated, nature brings me inspiration and creativity keeps me flowing!!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My Jewelry line is handmade with lots of Love. I’m proud to say that all my pieces are ethically and responsibly made. I got here today after learning the art of metalsmithing in the University Of Hawaii at Manoa in Oahu. I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and my passion for Surfing took me to study and Surf in the Hawaiian Islands. It was definitely challenging to get to where I am today, buying jewelry equipment and materials could get expensive but slowly through the years I’ve invested and grown my jewelry company. I’ve learned along the way to never give up!! No matter how hard it seems keep trying and follow your dreams!! My jewelry line is named after my daughter Kala, and it was founded back in 2012. I get a lot of my inspiration from nature and the ocean. All my pieces are handmade with Love in gold, goldfilled, silver, brass, and adorned with shells, pearls and semi precious stones. I love to create timeless jewelry pieces that you can surf, swim and live in.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First of all I would take them to my favorite beach called Rincon in Santa Barbara for a surf and a beach walk and collect all kinds of pretty shells and driftwood. .After the beach I would take them for a stroll in downtown Ventura to hit the thrift shops and dine in some of my favorite restaurants like, Paradise Pantry for some food and wine and Banzai Marina for some epic sushi and Sake. A trip to the Chanel islands is definetly a must if you want to see Dolphins whales, seals and the most beautiful sunsets on earth!! Summerland is one of my favorite little coastal towns!! Definetly would take them to visit Farmer and the Flea on a Sunday and shop from local atisans!! later on go for a glass of rose wine at Summerland Winery. If you really want to get adventurous I would love to take them on a road trip trough highway 1 all the way to the breathtaking views of Big Sur, visit one of my favorite towns called Carmel and drive trough the 17 mile scenic drive trough pebble beach where we could find a nice beach spot to picnic and open a bottle of wine. After that keep driving all the way to San Francisco to visit the Muir Woods and Sausalito and then head back trough the Central Coast.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe everything to my daughter and my husband. My daughter motivated me to stay home after giving birth and creating my Jewelry line and my husband supported me along the journey.
