We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Deangelo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I grew up in LA. I had a wild childhood. My dad bought an old school bus and converted it into a traveling school! We drove all around LA in our hippy school bus, doing school in the bus, then exploring the world. He was diagnosed with cancer when I was 9, and died shortly after. Losing my dad at that age changed the fabric of my being. Despite the trauma of losing him, I believe I inherited his free, adventurous spirit. My mom and grandmother were sound editors in Hollywood. My grandma was the first woman to win an Oscar for sound editing! I grew up with a very tangible sense that I could be anything. I have never been afraid of trying new things, or taking risks. I have always been creative. I love working with my hands. I tried every craft there is, but once I tried metalsmithing I was hooked. I have dedicated the last 26 years obsessively learning this craft.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I make jewelry for life’s everyday adventures. I use gemstones and metalwork to express the beauty of life. Life is hard. We have to be purposeful about seeking out beauty in life’s small moments. My specialty is hand stamped silver. I am inspired by the traditions of indigenous cultures, who used jewelry to express the beauty they saw in the natural world. Living here in beautiful Colorado, there is no shortage of natural inspiration. I have been creating jewelry for 26 years and it has been a hard road to get where I am today. I waited tables for years before this craft could support me. I put myself through goldsmith school. I did the art fair circuit most weekends for many years. It took 20 years of grinding and hustling to finally reach some level of success. The big shift came when i learned to think like a business, instead of a creative. It’s a very different mindset. In some ways you lose some freedom to create, but the constraints of being a wise business force a different type of creativity. Hiring help was terrifying but was the key to my growth. I now sell my jewelry wholesale to over 50 stores throughout the country, as well as the renowned Sundance catalog. I opened my own retail store in Englewood in January 2020. Yes, just weeks before the world shut down for Covid. But with tenacity and determination and some creative pivoting, we got through 2020. I am now enjoying running my little store, designing and selling, and always looking for what’s next.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite spots is RiNo. I love all the street art and the quirky vibe. I love the Denver central market, especially the pastries!
There would be a visit to the Denver art museum and of coarse Meow Wolf.
A hike in Golden Gate Canyon State Park or a bike ride in Bear Creek Park. Then dinner at Woodys in Golden.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am today without the constant and loving support of my husband. He has always believed in me. He even quit his job to stay home with our two boys so that I could pursue this full time. He has been the silent backbone of my business and our family. He trusts me to make decisions and take risks. He uses humor to keep me from taking all this too seriously.
