We had the good fortune of connecting with Sejal Parag and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sejal, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
When we first started KarmaLit we wanted to be a part of something greater. We created the Smell.Good.Do.Good initiative as a way to stand for something greater, facilitate learning, and to have an impact that lasts beyond our product’s ephemeral purpose. We are so proud to donate a percentage of each candle sold to DonorsChoose.org.
What should our readers know about your business?
Every idea starts with a problem. Ours was simple: the lack of premium, eco-friendly candles that filled a room, but were also affordable. Conscious of our environmental impact, we created a product using sustainable resources and from ingredients harvested ethically. Our wax is extracted from soybeans which are grown year-round by American farmers, making it completely renewable and sustainable. I started KarmaLit out of a love for giving back and a desire to do something that set my heart on fire. After 8 years planning events for an education non profit I was feeling unfullied. I was surrounded by teachers making enormous impacts with their students. I wanted to get out from behind the desk and create my own dream job. So I started slowly – researching, making mistakes, falling on my face, googling allthethings, asking questions, asking more questions, and falling again :). I spent hours upon hours and then days and weeks crafting our candle formulas, researching packaging and learning the handmade lingo. I’ll never forget what it felt like to see an email come to my inbox that read, “You’ve made a sale!”
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Snooze- best pancakes around! Get there early (pre pandemic) there is usually long lines! Union Station- a must to grab a cup of coffee, ice cream glass of wine (depending on the time of day) St. Mary’s Glacier- a quick (1 mile) hike but the views are amazing and it’s pretty easy for young kids and families Larmier Square- any of the restaurants on this street are great for dinner. Eating under twinkle lights is always a good idea!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Anyone that has liked a post, shared our brand, bought a candle, tested new scents, stayed up late to pack orders, listened to new ideas, or been a believer since day 1.
