Meet Seth Woolsey | Photographer, Videographer, & Cinematographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Seth Woolsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Seth, what inspires you?
There’s no shortage of things that inspired me to take up photography and videography. I’m often very inspired by nature. In fact, I would say that nature is what first got me interested in photography. When I was a child I loved going outdoors with a $10 camera I got from a flea market. There was something that always moved me about seeing different animals. I believe, in a way, seeing different animals existing freely and living their lives as they were meant to be lived helped calm me. I tend to complicate things, so seeing different creatures simply doing what they inherently were meant to do with seemingly very few cares was a comfort. Knowing that their simple existence had an extraordinary effect on their ecosystem or home helped me better understand that the same principle applies to us. I was inspired by the beautiful photography of individuals like Art Wolfe and very much knew that I wanted to capture the amazing wonders of nature as he did.
I’m also very much inspired by feelings—the feeling I get when I capture an image for instance. What I love reminding myself is that every image I capture is a once in a lifetime image. No moment will ever occur twice, you’re recording something that will never happen again. I love the feeling I get when I do this for others. Whether it’s recording moments for a couple’s wedding or it’s taking images for a senior session. Neither one is less important than the other. Each click of the camera is an act of love from myself to my client. That image connects us and better helps the client access the emotions they felt when the image was taken. Photography is an amazing way to reconnect with previous versions of ourselves: who we once were, how we once felt, who we once loved. It’s as simple as looking at an old picture. And in my opinion, it’s one of the many avenues to remembering and connecting to our past. I believe those feelings are the ones that inspire me the most.

What should our readers know about your business?
My business is Woolsey Photo and Film. I’d like to think my deep love for people sets me apart from other photographers and videographers. Everyone’s going through the ‘human experience’, but every person’s experience is unique. I try to apply this idea in every photo or video session I have with a client. No session should be a chore, whether it be a family, senior, engagement, or wedding session—rather, each one should be an avenue to connecting with another very special individual. I’m most excited to travel the world and add to my adventure photography portfolio. For me, traveling is not an escape—it’s a source of fulfillment. My goal is to capture images that help viewers connect with other people and places, regardless of physical or cultural distance. I love meeting new people from all backgrounds and photographing the beautiful landscapes they inhabit.
More than anything, I’ve learned patience in creating Woolsey Photo and Film. I knew nothing about starting my own business when I began, but I thankfully had friends that could help walk me through the processes. I got where I am today through hard work and thanks to the assistance of others. Everything else has been trial and error, and I am still learning. I grew my business as responsibly as I could, using all the spare time I had after my full-time job learning about new filmography and photography techniques and putting every cent I made straight back into my business. I’m the type of person who likes to have everything settled, but when you attempt to slowly grow a business like I have, having everything figured out is not something that’s afforded to you. For me, photography and videography is a great way to ground me and keep me in the here and now. At times, I consider it my meditation practice. This practice and the connections I form drives my passion for the art. I consider my photography a collaboration between my ideas and the ideas of my client. My ultimate goal is to create a new work which perfectly molds my clients desires and my vision into one new creation.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Denver is one of my favorite cities in the U.S. If I were planning a week’s long itinerary, there would be several must sees in Denver and the surrounding area. I would have to insist on visiting Meow Wolf, which is a museum of mind-blowing psychedelic art and exhibits. We’d have to go to LoHi and eat at one of my favorite restaurants, Linger. They have some of my favorite small plates, and the patio is great. I’d take my travel partner to LoDo and have them checkout the Denver Milk Market, which will give everyone a variety of fantastic food options. My personal favorite is the fish n’ chips at Albina’s. If the party was up for a day of shopping, we would continue our adventure downtown and visit the 16th Street Mall. I think it would be a necessity to also take a day and do some hiking or climbing in one of the many beautiful areas around Denver. I love exploring Rocky Mountain National Park, and the Great Sand Dune National Park is a favorite spot of mine for capturing nature.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It’s hard to not make my response pages long. I first have to shout out my amazing wife for always supporting and encouraging me to do what I love. I also gotta give a big shout out to my friend Dylan Thomas who continues to help me to this day with any of my photography or cinematography questions that I have. Thanks to my friends Mark and Joe for always reviewing my art and being honest with me about it. And although my college degree isn’t necessarily related to photography and videographer, I have to give a big shout out to my college professors like Dr. Henary, who always made themselves available to assist me with varying projects.
