We had the good fortune of connecting with Susan Alderfer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susan, what do you attribute your success to?
One of the most important factor’s behind my success is Integrity and Passion. Each of my clients is very special to me. I see my clients as individual people and I like to learn a little bit about my client to capture exactly who they are during a photoshoot. I want each photoshoot to be unique and special.
I feel that as a small business owner, there are several aspects to owning a business, Honesty, integrity and humility. I love our community and always give back thru my photography.
I feel it is very important to collaborate with all small business owners and bring everyone together.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a young child, I was fascinated with photography. I would pick up a little instamatic (those little camera’s with the flash bulb on top) and run up to random people and say “cheese” and snap the picture. I would take my roll of film to the drug store. I was so impatient, I could not stand the wait, to see how they turned out. Years of practice and many rolls of film and trips to the drug store, I developed an eye for creativity thru photography.
My passion turned into a “job” about 25 years ago, when I was asked by a Harley Davidson, Independent Dealer to come out to an event to take pictures, I was thrilled! That event, turned into another, then another. Those jobs turned into Car shows. During one of the car shows, I was asked by a magazine company if I would partner with them to take pictures of their models with their cars, again I was thrilled and started shooting for them. I continued my photography, shooting for AAU, private sector companies and private clients; Events, Corporate and Professional Headshots, family, engagements, weddings, senior and class pictures.
Honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, customer service and a good business plan are a few keys to success.
I have had some challenges along the way, thru faith, perseverance, family and surrounding myself with amazing friends and business owners who encouraged me, I overcame those challenges.
Photography changes the way you see things. Everyone has a story, both professionally and personally. When I am photographing a client I am capturing and freezing time of an amazing range of emotion from a family’s love to a graduating senior, to a life event like a wedding or a retirement.
Volunteering is incredibly important to me, not only in my photography business but personally. I love giving back to my community and neighbors. I created a Facebook group, called Neighbors meeting Neighbors and supporting our community. I feel that it is extremely important to bring our community together and support one another, not only in business but to build personal relationships with our Neighbors.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start out with a trip to either Bernie’s Kitchen or Patty Ann’s Cafe. Finish off with a cup of coffee at Cowgirl Coffee.
Once we finished our coffee and girl talk, I would take my best friend to The Secret Well Boutique, then head over to Always and Forever Bridal, after our clothing and accessories where taken care of. We would go to K & W accents for a few little gifts and then over to Embellished Rose for a plant. Then onto the Farmer’s Market.
That evening we would go to Elizabeth Brewery for a drink and some dinner.
The next day I would take her to main street to do a little more shopping and site seeing on beautiful main street, then head over to Castlewood canyon for a hike, stop in to Catalina’s for dinner.
Traveling to Denver area to site see. Head home stop off at the Sawmill.
Elizabeth Rodeo weekend at the Parade, Elizabash and the Rodeo.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband and our two (grown) sons, Chris and Matt, our future daughter in law, Nicole, my amazing family and wonderful friends. I am so blessed to be surrounded by people who encourage, support and love me, thru my 25 years of photography, they have all been so supportive and encouraging, Thank you!
