We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanya Bakker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tanya, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I am a fairly “risk adverse” person. I prefer to have a plan with a solid, expected outcome. Photography forces me outside my box – I have to hunt out subjects, practice my camera skills, edit, and share, but I have no idea how my work will be received. It feels very uncertain to me. My family has been very supportive and it was at their encouragement that I decided to start my Photography page.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Though I do have an average 9 to 5 to support my photography habit (and pay my bills) I am an avid nature lover and will use any excuse to get myself outdoors. Since picking up my camera I have had my eyes and ears opened again to the world around me. I used to be aware of birds, of sunrises, of lovely clouds. As my skills improved I began to recognize dozens of different species. What once were songbirds have become Redwinged Blackbirds. Pygmy Nuthatches. That soft rustle? That’s a Vole, just a foot away. I love recognizing the random shape in the trees as an owl. I talk to wildlife like I’m a Disney princess, as though I expect an answer.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Truly, this depends. My good time is not everyone’s cup of tea.
But if I had to plan a fun mini-vacay, I would probably end up on a road trip. Maybe visit Steamboat Springs and stay at an Airbnb. Or Estes Park in late summer to see the Elk Rut. Anything and anywhere beautiful, with gorgeous outdoor areas to explore and new creatures to catch in my lens.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wonderful little family deserves all the credit for boosting me. My husband and daughter are my muses, my cheerleaders, and my gear mules.
