We had the good fortune of connecting with Teresa Cierco-lópez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Teresa, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One thing people outside the outdoor industry might not realize is how intimidating it can be to venture into the outdoors for the first time. I understand this personally because when I moved to Colorado in 2002, I had no prior experience or knowledge about outdoor activities.
Coming from Barcelona, Spain, I grew up as a beach girl, spending summers with my family by the Mediterranean Sea. The outdoors here felt unfamiliar and daunting at first.
What makes a huge difference is having someone by your side who is knowledgeable, skilled, speaks your language, and understands the risks—whether it’s unpredictable weather, wildlife, or simply knowing how to be prepared for an overnight situation. That kind of support helps people feel safer and more confident.
At Exploremos (which means “Let’s explore” in Spanish), we intentionally ensure that a trusted staff member or representative is present at each event alongside our partners. This approach creates a unique level of trust and support, especially for beginners. Establishing that connection is key because it builds confidence in participants. Over time, they not only enjoy these experiences but gain the skills and knowledge needed to explore on their own.
The collaborative nature of our work is supported by a network of over 30 partner organizations from Eagle County and across Colorado. This collaboration, combined with funding from GOCO (Great Outdoors Colorado), allows us to design and deliver unique, impactful programs tailored to the needs of our participants. Working together with our partners enables us to pool resources, expertise, and creativity to make the outdoors more accessible to our community.
Being a part of Walking Mountains, a highly trusted and respected 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, provides Exploremos with the leadership, support, and credibility we need to continue growing and improving every day.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a former elementary teacher in Eagle County for 22 years, I taught at a dual immersion language school where approximately 65% of our students were native Spanish speakers. During that time, I witnessed firsthand the challenges our Spanish-speaking community faced in accessing the outdoors. Barriers such as financial constraints, lack of information about available opportunities, inexperience, and the absence of resources in their native language often kept families from enjoying outdoor activities.
Now, as the manager of this incredible collaborative group, I still feel very much like a teacher and mentor. I take pride in supporting community members and helping them create lifelong memories through inspiring and rewarding outdoor experiences.
My background as a teacher taught me the value of understanding cultural diversity and personal experiences. These connections are what bring people together and make the world a better place. At Exploremos, listening to participants’ personal stories and embracing their cultural backgrounds with an open heart has allowed us to become a trusted resource.
Our team reflects this shared commitment. Our staff and representatives come from Mexico, Perú, and Spain (my home country). While we all share the Spanish language, we each bring our unique cultural and culinary traditions. This diversity makes us a family—a team that learns from and grows with the participants we serve.
By communicating in their native language and fostering mutual respect, we build a strong, reliable bond with our participants. This connection not only empowers them but also reinforces our mission to serve our community in the best way possible.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting, I would absolutely take them to the Western San Juan Mountains—a place that feels like home to me and where I love spending time.
We’d start in Ouray, often called the “Switzerland of America.” Our first stop would be Orvis Hot Springs to relax and unwind in the natural, soothing waters. Afterward, we’d head into town for a light, delicious Tom Kha Gai soup at Thai Chili Restaurant—always a treat! Wandering through the town’s charming shops, we’d admire mining memorabilia and marvel at the stunning crystals that have been unearthed from these mountains. The San Juan Mountains are pure magic, and learning about the area’s mining history never ceases to amaze me—especially the vision and perseverance of pioneers like Otto Mears, who shaped so much of this region.
Next, we’d drive up to the Ouray Overlook for some breathtaking photos of the town below before hitting the Perimeter Trail, a hike built on the remnants of mining trails. We’d also stop by Box Canyon—a must-see! If it’s winter, we’d definitely watch the ice climbers in action at the Ouray Ice Park, an experience that’s as thrilling as it is inspiring.
From Ouray, we’d take a scenic drive over Red Mountain Pass, one of the most stunning drives in Colorado. In winter, we’d stop in Ironton for a quick snowshoe hike or some cross-country skiing. If it’s summer, we’d head toward Hayden Mountain or Richmond Pass for a day hike. The views up there are absolutely to die for, and if we’re lucky, we might even spot a moose!
Another highlight would be visiting the nearby mine relics, which are a fascinating window into the region’s geology and its rich mining heritage. These relics tell the story of what made this area so renowned and special.
To cap off the day, I’d find a quiet spot along Highway 550 just before sunset. We’d do a short hike, set up a small picnic, and watch the sun dip behind the peaks, painting the sky with vibrant colors. Then, as the stars begin to unfold above the mountains, we’d take in the beauty of a night sky that feels untouched and endless.
The San Juan Mountains are incredibly unique—a place where history, natural beauty, and adventure come together. Sharing their magic with someone I care about would make for the perfect week, full of unforgettable moments.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our work would simply not be possible without the support provided by funding from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO). The funding from GOCO enables us to offer our programs for free and has also made it possible to hire and train staff that represent the communities we serve. This has been and continues to be a community movement. We would not be where we are today without the 30+ partner organizations and leadership from Walking Mountains.
