We had the good fortune of connecting with Terry Maker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Terry, what role has risk played in your life or career?
My work is multi media employing many different materials and processes. I believe one of the most important aspects of being a successful artist is being and staying curious. Inherent to taking exciting risks is a sense of curiosity. I believe this quality keeps my work fresh and my audience involved and
engaged.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always known I was an artist. Since early childhood I’ve gravitated toward working with my hands. Although my chosen path of making art has not been easy, it’s what I was designed to do. Every time I step into the studio, I am reminded of the joy that comes from dedicating my life to making art. I’ve had numerous exhibitions throughout my career and as my work evolves, I find the chance to communicate and share this joy with my audience a powerful motivation for continuing what I do. I believe the reason for making art is to listen to one’s inner voice and then to express it so others might be inspired to follow their voice. I ultimately see my work as a gift from God that is meant to be a gift for the viewer, further inspiring them to go forward and follow their own path.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Louisville, CO a suburb of Boulder, CO and I spend most of my time, in my studio. So, I’m not the one to ask. I’d recommend picking up a copy of Westword or the Denver Post- or closer to me, the Daily Camera. I’m still a fan and subscriber of the actual Newspaper. Which I might add deserves our support. Inside there’s a plethora of current events and opportunities, restaurants, food reviews for just about everyone.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My work is represented by the Robischon Gallery. For over a decade the owners Jim Robischon and Jennifer Doran have been powerful representatives of my work. They are strong mentors and encouraging friends that believe in me and what I do. I credit the gallery and their amazing staff with working tirelessly on my behalf and bringing much attention to my work. I also credit my husband Chris Rogers for his enduring love and support of my artist career. It’s an amazing blessing to have such a supportive partner who continues to believe in me and my life journey.
