Meet The Sogs | Lee Hutchinson & Dylan McConnell – Band on the Run

We had the good fortune of connecting with The Sogs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi The, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
On a local level, it’s about contributing to and enriching the landscape of the music scene that we’re a part of. We want to help build the community of musicians and artists around us, and we want to work to continuously be a cornerstone of that community ourselves. On a national level we see what other artists have done in their communities, and how they’ve worked to establish themselves and their entire scene, and we’re always looking to create a space like that here in Colorado.
Envisioning the end goal is difficult. Our collective dream has always been to play music and be a part of the music community as long as we want, and are able to. The “end goal” makes it sound like we have a timetable or an expiration date. We’d love to play music for a living, we’d love to play music for anyone and everyone who wants to hear it, and we will always play for as long as the desire is within us. At the “end” of our career we just want to be remembered for our passions.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We’re an alt-rock duo from Northern Colorado that have been playing music together for over decade, and individually for even longer. We think what sets us apart from other bands is our commitment to being ourselves 100% of the time. We don’t try to emulate other bands, we don’t force songs or lyrics, we don’t compromise on appearances; we do what comes naturally, we write when we’re inspired, and we play our asses off every time we take a stage. We get excited when we see people we don’t know enjoying our output. There’s nothing in the world like a stranger paying attention to something you created.
A lesson we learned early on is not to get discouraged. There will be people in any scene that try to force you out, and when you feel that reaction it usually means you’re onto something. If you love something and want to do it bad enough, there will be always a place for you and there will always be people who want to support you and enjoy watching you succeed.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If we’re doing a little bar hopping we’re taking them to try some of the local breweries. Colorado has some of the best craft breweries on the planet: Grimm Brothers and Verboten in Loveland, Weldwerks and Wiley Roots in Greeley, Zwei in Fort Collins. Maybe we’ll have a night cap one evening at Social, the speakeasy in Old Town, Fort Collins or at Black and Blues Music and Brews (a concert venue, music store, and bar all wrapped into one) in downtown Loveland.
Lee would like to point out his favorite restaurant is a taco truck called The Taco Man that’s frequently parked in Loveland at the intersection of 402 and 287. Dylan will eat just about anything, but if we’re going out for a nice lunch one day Henry’s in downtown Loveland is a favorite.
Folks from out of the area have got to see Estes Park. We’ll take them to the Christmas store and take pictures of elk on the way. There’s also a million great places to see a show; if we’re not playing somewhere, we’ll go to Washington’s or the Aggie in Fort Collins, or the Moxi in Greeley where there’s almost always somebody great playing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Spider-Man. Not the movie Spider-Mans, but the picture Spider-Mans. The ones in books.
