We had the good fortune of connecting with Theresa Marcotte and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Theresa, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I can tell you what I used to think about risk- I never took any. The definition of risk is the possibility of loss. I can be a very matter-of-fact person so I used to make the safe decision, why? It was safe and I knew the result. But no one gets anywhere in life by only playing it safe. Taking risks can be scary, I still get scared. But taking risks got me to where I am today. I now own a business, that was a huge risk! I moved to a state where I didn’t know anyone. I put myself out there and created new relationships, I said yes to every opportunity and continue to do so and I get out of my comfort zone. Thats the biggest part of being successful, if you’re not willing to risk something, you will stay exactly where you are for the rest of your life. And I knew I wanted more!

What should our readers know about your business?
My salon is a small, boutique hair salon in Colorado Springs that really focuses on the client experience as well as developing the modern hairstylist. If you are a client of ours, you know how well taken care of you will be- no matter what type of hair you have. We really stay at the forefront of color- thats our specialty but we do all things hair. But I really am most proud of what we do for the hair industry. The hair industry used to be looked at as a secondary job, a job you’ll never be financially stable at and it was never a well respected career. I really am obsessed with helping hairstylists create financial stability for themselves, helping them become more business savvy, helping them become insatiable for growth and settling for nothing but the best when it comes to the technical stuff. Its honestly so fun!! We get to have fun all day at work, doing great hair, making people feel good, chatting with clients and being incredibly successful doing it. I honestly never thought I would be a salon owner either. I wouldn’t be here today without my incredible mentors who gave me the space to thrive and helped me find the drive to want more for myself that I felt so inclined to want to give that back to our industry as well. It wasn’t easy, I’ve had to get out of my comfort zone more times than I’d like, I’ve had to make some poor decisions to learn what the right ones are and every time I stumble I get back up and move forward because yes, business is serious but its also important for me to have fun doing it! I refuse to dwell in the negatives because those are going to happen whether you want them to or not, I think of them as learning experiences in this crazy ride we call life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have so many favorite spots around town! White Pie is a must for pizza and cocktails. Dos Santos for tacos and arguably the best margaritas in town. I love Cerberus Brewing Company, they are dog friendly, have a great outdoor area and have phenomenal food, of course along with the beer. I am quite an outdoorsy person to so you can usually find me hiking around Palmer Park or taking a trek out to Divide for the views (especially to see the aspens change).

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh gosh! I have so many shoutouts I can make. My husband, he really has been there for me through all my crazy ideas. Even across the world for many of my career changes, he has stayed my rock. Always encouraging me, always cheering me on. And secondly my incredible business partners, Lorean Cairns and Billy Canu. Lorean and Billy are the most supportive, reliable, open-minded partners. The 3 of us really work so well together with making smart decisions for our business and always looking for what we can do for our team members.
