We had the good fortune of connecting with Thomas Sedberry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Thomas, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Quite honestly, I have never enjoyed working for someone else and doing life around that. Photo/video work was a hobby for me that thankfully became a career and when I had the opportunity to start SedberryCreative I knew I had to take the opportunity to be my own boss. This allows me to not only pursue my passion, but also control things as much as I can. Obviously there are pains to starting your own business and there’s days where I don’t think about. Then there’s those days where I question everything and have to remind myself I do what I love. Overall, my experience has been favorable. Thankfully, this is isn’t the first business I have started. I helped start another production company here in Denver. With that experience once I broke away from that I knew this was a risk worth taking. Ultimately it came down to be pursuing my passion and hoping that it would work out!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart from others is my love for people. I would rather work with a client than not. Which means sometimes not making the most or having the most desirable experience for myself. Ultimately, this is about more than me and if I can be of help to a small business looking to grow just as I am or a couple who can’t afford the highest quality content then I can feel better about what I am doing vs trying to make the most money every single time. It helps me to feel what I do is purposeful.

Honestly, I am still climbing, Paying bills some months is stressful and the future is always daunting so that alone has been difficult. I mean I am still on my parents health insurance and that expires this March when I turn 26, but I wouldn’t change a thing about it. The last two years since I stepped away from corporate america have been challenging. Each day, week, and month presenting a new challenge. however, I wouldn’t change a thing because it’s formed me into the person I am today and has brought me to the people I have now. Obviously, I wish things could be easier sometimes, but the challenge is part of the fun. It allows me to grow both creatively and personally. I think I have learned a lot and im continuing to learn as I go. An important lesson I have learned is that in this community of creatives its important to be active and engaging with techniques and styles. The willingness to collaborate can go a long way. I think another important thing that was hard for me to learn was to value myself and my time. Primarily, financially and valuing myself enough to know that this is my career and I provide a service worth paying for. It was hard to get to this level of comfortability and not allowing people to take advantage of me. it’s something that I still continue to learn and grow with,

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think my biggest shoutout has to go to my fiancé Kendra, She has been my biggest support. When times have been tough and I didn’t know where to turn I knew I could always rely on her. She has been such a key source of my success so far and I know I wouldn’t be where I am without her. I also owe a thank you to my friends old and new who have supported me along the way. Some, like an old roommate allowed me to tag along on journeys and bring a camera along when we were both in college. To this day that same friend, Zach, teaches me new techniques and skills as I progress always bringing me a step closer. I also owe a thank you to a former business partner, Kellen, who taught me many tricks of the trade and helped me get to a place of owning my own gear so that when I broke away from our partnership I was able to build my own business. I also have such an awesome community of friends and family who have prayed for me constantly and gone as far as feeding me new clients or even becoming clients themselves. Safe to say I wouldn’t be where I am without my community of friends and family who have helped me get this far.
