We had the good fortune of connecting with Tkale Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tkale, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I first decided to start my in-home bakery, I wanted to have a job that allowed me to spend time with my kids as well as give me a creative outlet. Being able to work from home allowed me to set my own hours and move my work around my kids’ schedules. It also allowed me to essentially make edible art as art has always been one of my passions. I was able to create a life where I felt like a stay at home mom as well as have my dream career!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always been an artist at heart. Whether it’s drawing, painting or writing, all forms of art I find joy in. The great part of being an in-home baker is that I get to apply all forms of art to my cakes. I get to create with fondant, paint with food coloring, pipe with buttercream and bring an idea to form like reading a book and imagining the scenes. It wasn’t easy going from painting on hard paper to soft fondant, and learning how buttercream worked took time. Just like all things in life, practice is the key to success! I think what sets me apart is being able to see a picture and replicate it in cake form. I pour my heart into every cake and my clients can see that!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many amazing places to visit in northern Colorado! Whether it’s hiking, food truck rally’s, mountain towns or just heading to a brewery, there is no time to be bored here. If my best friend were to visit for the weekend, we would make sure to stop by CC’s Flower Truck to design our own bouquets, shop at Lemon’s and Lace, see the sun set on top of horsetooth mountain and end our night with a drink at Timnath Beerwerks. Of course if there was more time we would go to the Hidden Stem in Fort Collins to make our own terrariums and play pickle ball with our fun mom friends!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My ability to have an in-home bakery is because of the amazing support from my family and friends. Both my sister and mom helped me get my business off the ground by helping bake and deliver my cakes, and my friends spread the word of my fun creations! I now have incredible clients who order cakes for all their big life celebrations. Today, I could not do the amount of orders without my loving partner and amazing kids who are my biggest fans!
