Meet Vanessa Houk | Portrait & Headshot Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Vanessa Houk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vanessa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
You can’t be an entrepreneur without being a risk-taker—it’s all one big risk. You risk putting your work out into the world and opening yourself up to critique, sometimes from people who’ve never picked up a camera but feel compelled to tell you how they’d have done it better. You risk your finances when you go all in on making a business work, and you risk time—time that could be spent with your family or doing something more stable.
It’s not always easy, and it’s certainly not always fun. But that’s part of the deal. The payoff comes when you find success on your own terms—when you experience the freedom of setting your own schedule, building something that’s truly yours, and knowing it was worth every risk you took to get there.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I’m most proud of is that I’ve built both my photography skills and business from the ground up. I started with no formal experience and taught myself everything—through trial, error, late nights, and a real passion for creating meaningful images. On top of that, I’ve grown my business without ever paying for advertising. Every client has come through word of mouth, trust, and honesty—and that means more to me than any marketing campaign ever could. It’s taken time, patience, and a lot of grit, but it’s incredibly rewarding to know that I’ve built something solid and sustainable by staying true to myself and my work.
It was not easy because I didn’t start with any formal training or professional background in photography. I had to learn everything from the ground up—how to use my gear, light a subject properly, direct people, edit professionally, and run a business. While I didn’t have a traditional path, I did seek out education from some incredible mentors and resources along the way. I learned a great deal from photographers like Peter Hurley, Improve Photography, Trevor Daly, Connor Hibbs, and Rafal Weigel, whose insights helped me refine my skills and push my work further.
Even with guidance, the process required a lot of trial and error, countless hours of practice, and a willingness to be uncomfortable. I built my business without paid advertising—relying entirely on word of mouth, client relationships, and honesty. That made the growth slower, but far more meaningful. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and the community I’ve built by staying true to my values and doing the work every step of the way.
I want the world to know that my brand is rooted in clean, colorful, fun, and professional imagery. Every photograph I create is crafted with intention—my goal is to deliver exceptional quality portraits that are both polished and timeless. I want people to feel confident, comfortable, and truly seen when they step in front of my camera.
At the end of the day, I want my work to speak for itself: bold, consistent, technically sound, and filled with life. Whether it’s a headshot, a senior portrait, or a family session, my goal is always the same—to create images that feel authentic, elevated, and built to last.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
