We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Aikin Salada and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristin, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
While working as a voice actor looks fun and IS fun, most people have no idea how complicated it is to figure out how to connect with people who hire you! The avenue to get auditions and build relationships with hiring folks varies hugely for animation vs. commercials vs. audiobooks vs. medical narration and so on. Plus, the upfront financial investment and time investment is significant – taking classes, purchasing equipment and setting up a home studio, learning editing skills, networking, preparing for and recording a demo, building a website, and attending voiceover conferences all cost money. Voice actors are business owners and entrepreneurs as much as they are creatives, so most VO-curious creatives aren’t aware of how much work goes into setting up all the business and marketing aspects of running a VoiceOver business.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Having worked early in my career for Colorado Outward Bound Professional, I am a huge fan of leadership development (my other business: New Angle Consulting, LLC) and experiential learning approaches to teamwork. I’ve been able to facilitate executive teams and emcee all-company offsites for people in all kinds of industries, which helps me bring understanding, empathy, and a business sense to the fun energy of storytelling for eLearning, corporate narration and non-fiction audiobooks. As an entrepreneur who can never take for granted that more clients will come my way, I’ve had to never lose sight of rich networking opportunities and the importance of offering tips, articles, connections of value to people that I meet. Referrals have been a huge source of business and staying on top of consistent marketing is a never-ending challenge!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love grabbing coffee with out of town friends at the Flagship REI downtown in the summer and dipping our toes in the water at Confluence Park. I invited my last colleague from New England to join me for yoga in the boathouse in Washington Park before grabbing lunch at Denver Beer Company on S. Downing Street. I’ve enjoyed taking many out of town friends to ski and enjoy Spring/Summer in Breckenridge and always encourage people to drink tons of water and head to a concert at Red Rocks!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Elaine Clark wrote the first comprehensive voiceover book There’s Money Where Your Mouth Is and I began my voiceover education in her VO acting school. I loved working with Canadians Lisa Suliteanu and Kim Handysides to make my last set of demo reels, and I’ve gained lots of marketing wisdom from Marc Scott VOPreneur.
