Meet Whitney Lynch: Owner & Baker of Kippcakes Baking Company

We had the good fortune of connecting with Whitney Lynch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Whitney, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My work life balance has changed quite a bit over the last few years. It was in 2017 when things in my personal and professional life began shifting. My husband and I had our first child, a baby girl that year, while I simultaneously tried to get my very part time baking business off the ground. I then decided I wanted to be a stay at home mom, and quit my 9-5 day job. The shift was gradual, but as time went on, I slowly grew a small baking business on the side, while full time raising kids. It wasn’t until the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020 when the doors to my dreams began flying open. We had our second child, a baby boy, in early January and opportunities for Kippcakes (my business) were coming up left and right. I had to devote more time to my booming business and dream while also raising my beautiful kids – needless to say the balance was hard! Now, in 2021, my work life balance is an ever changing and evolving lesson I’m trying to learn. I am now the exclusive bakery for a wedding venue in Littleton, baking for parties and showers and events, teaching myself the ins and outs of business, and trying my hardest to maintain my attention, love and devotion to my husband, kids and home life. Work life balance was never something I ever thought I would have to juggle but here I am! Taking it one day, one cake at a time.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business, Kippcakes Baking Company is named after my family. Which that alone is so special to me, because as a baker, I want to bring families, friends and people together because of cake. Before I became a Lynch, my maiden name was Whitney Kipp. Being as I’m one of many girls in our extended family, the Kipp name would not continue on. I wanted to honor my family by naming my business around it. I am most proud of the way this dream and business evolved over time. I started baking at a very young age in a 4-H club. In high school I was able to bake for a local coffee shop and seems as though my heart and mind always went back to baking. My background and degree was in Communications (which is proving to be useful) but I have no culinary or business education, so it’s all been a learning process. I’ve had to teach myself everything (through mostly Google) and that had been both, the most challenging and rewarding thing I’ve done with this business!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Colorado and all it has to offer, but honestly, my favorite things to do are hanging out with the people who make those experiences so much better. My favorite spot is sitting around my dining table or living room, eating really good food and playing really fun games. I would make my friend some homemade sour cream enchiladas and margaritas and we would bust out Monopoly deal. That would be my ideal night in. If we were going out for the day, I would take them on a fun walk on the Bear Creek trail, looping back around to get BBQ on the way back. My ideal night out with a friend would be somewhere in Golden or the Highlands eating really good Mexican food and Little Man’s Ice cream for dessert. We’ve also come to love Urban Putt for a fun night out downtown! And for a weekend long trip, I would rent a cozy little Airbnb in the mountains, preferable Breckinridge, for a fun getaway!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be where I am in this business today if it weren’t for God. He has guided and directed me every step of the way with my calling and dream of becoming a baker and business owner (with no precious background in this). I would also not be as successful as I am without my husband’s loving and faithful support of my dream. He has always wanted me to do this and helps out with deliveries and the kids and cleaning, all while working a full time job! My parents, sister and family have always been my number one cheerleaders in this journey! I used to work at Gigi’s Cupcakes right out of college and I will always credit them to how that experience taught me so many valuable lessons and grew me in my skills of baking. It was an incredible job and experience that has helped me to be where I am today. I have always looked to other successful women in my industry and beyond that are running hard after their dreams and it inspires me each day!
