Meet Zenobia Rivera

We had the good fortune of connecting with Zenobia Rivera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zenobia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I began in the beauty industry 19+ years ago working for yourself wasn’t as accessible or readily available as it is today. It didn’t take long to realize working under someone else meant I couldn’t uphold the quality or standards I held for my work, after working in a revolving door wax studio I was done and ready to create and build my own business. I wanted to take my time and give each client adequate attention and provide service to the best of my ability rather than rushing to take the next one in line. In 2011 I opened The Eyebrow Lady and my first year in business I just kept getting more and more clients in my chair!

What should our readers know about your business?
There has been a significant rise in the popularity of eyebrow services within the beauty industry compared to when I began 19 years ago. There’s more than one way to get the job done, but I find a lot of brow studios are using the mapping method when it comes to shaping. While that may get the job done it definitely creates a “one size fits all” look to a service that can and should be customized to the individual far more than mapping can provide. At The Eyebrow Lady we use the tried and true method I created for myself over 15 years ago! It would be really easy for me to take a short cut and get more clients in a day but we pride and prioritize quality over quantity over an extra few dollars a day. Trends come and go but I’m proud we’ve stayed with providing the highest quality service we possibly can.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m an avid coffee drinker so I would require we begin our day at one of the many great coffee shops around Denver; Crema, Middle State, Queen City, 2914 Coffee and the list goes on. We would absolutely picnic at Cheeseman Park and people watch with our Lou’s Italian sandwiches. Maybe a movie at Alamo Drafthouse in Sloans Lake? We’d grab afternoon drinks at Yacht Club or Fort Green then dinner Hop Alley or Ginger Pig if we were lucky enough to get a seat. If they’re visiting in good time we’d go to Santa Fe Arts District for First Friday.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m lucky to have an incredibly supportive family, from day one of announcing “I’m quitting my job to open my own business”, I was met with nothing but support, encouragement and total belief in me along the way. But I’m also very, very lucky to have some of the greatest people come through my door, turning into long time clients who entrust me with their brows, lashes, bodies and faces, some clients for well over a decade. For anyone looking to work for themselves another incredible resources is SCORE.. I cannot describe enough how invaluable free advice, mentorship and assistance in specialized areas is for small businesses. Business coaches charges thousands and thousands of dollars in what SCORE offers completely free of charge. All these years later I still turn to SCORE for webinars and one on one advice.
