The Risk Series: how do you think about risk?

Risk is the most common topic that comes up in our conversations with entrepreneurs and so each week we ask entrepreneurs to talk to us on the record about how they think about risk.

Taking risk has been a central theme in my life for decades. I was a rock climber for many years an have always been drawn to high risk. Looking back, I recognize the importance of taking risk as a part of self growth. Risk taking has allowed me to grow exponentially over the past few years. Before I started my business, I felt like I was stuck in a rut- doing the same thing everyday for what seemed like years. Risk is how my career started. Out of college, I had a stable career that I was proficient at, with a clear path or growth, but I just couldn’t take it. The prospect of doing the same task in the same place at the same time every day was eating away at me. I knew it wasn’t right. The meaning behind the name The Endeavor Works is personal and related to the risk of starting my own business. Though I grew up in landlocked Colorado I romanticized all things nautical. While visiting family at 8 in Bristol I got to board a replica of The HMS Endeavor and it was one of the most formative experiences of my life. In order for the magic to happen, you have to be courageous and take chances. I craved something outside of the box and always envisioned myself being my own boss. I felt very strongly that I wanted to change my career path and knew that in order to see any change, I had to embrace the uncomfortable. I am of the belief that risk-taking is a foundational building block of success. I was raised to have confidence in my abilities, and to know that I can get wherever I want in life with hard work. I don’t think starting a business is a risk. I think depending on others to provide an income for me is a risk. As long as it’s a calculated will research approach in an area you have knowledge and passion in , it’s not a risk. Read more>>
