We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joey, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I don’t think starting a business is a risk. I think depending on others to provide an income for me is a risk. As long as it’s a calculated will research approach in an area you have knowledge and passion in , it’s not a risk.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I had the same dream that most young afro Americans men have. I wanted to play in then NBA. I worked hard and was drafted my Phoenix suns in 1991. Although I didn’t make the NBA , I did play overseas for a few years. This set me up in 2 ways. I learned to work hard and focus as well as generate cash to invest in what would be my eventual future in real estate.

When playing bball I would study how people made money throughout the ages by reading books like , Rich dad Poor Dad , Richest man in Babalon , millionaire next door , etc. I came to the conclusion that people made money in these ways .

Special Talent , new technology. Real Estate and illegal actions. I wasn’t trying the illegal actions , my special talent in sport was over , I missed the computer so the only thing left was real estate..

I started reading up on real estate , got my license before I finished playing and bought a few properties. I started building my own investment properties when I couldn’t buy them at the cost I wanted.

I continued working in real state. In all areas.
Worked for a builder / Wilshire homes
Built and bought real estate
Did all my own repairs on my properties

I did all of this 7 years , 7 Days a week until a had enough money to coach with h was my passion.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I now live in South Australia known for its amazing wine so we would visit the wine region for a brunch followed by a site seeing trip through the region. Next day we would go for a nice dinner at one of my favourite local restaurants like carmines Italian or Meat and Wine Co.

S.A. Also is known for its beautiful beaches so we would have a beach day and followed up with a home cooked meal by me and some home made bourbon. ( my hobby is making different spirits.

Lastly we would visit some of the wine bars and city life adelaide had to offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My father , a black man from the south, with just a high school diploma would talk to me about stocks , owning my own business and letting your money work for you Vs working for money.. He shaped my mindset along with providing a great example. He owned numerous businesses as I was growing up.
