What They Know and We Don’t

We asked insiders and experts from various industries to tell us something they think outsiders are unaware of and we’ve shared a few of those responses below.

Many people are unaware that as a birth photographer and doula, I have to live an on-call lifestyle. This means that I am fully available to my clients 24/7 starting at 38 weeks gestation. During my on-call period, I always have my phone on and nearby, my bags ready, gas in my car, childcare lined up, and stay within a few miles of home. Being on-call means I sometimes have to miss birthdays, holidays, and events in order to be with a birthing client. It also means I am ready to hop out of bed and into the car at 3am if I need to. I’ll say the biggest thing that I feel like people don’t understand about radio is that we have a boss just like any other job. People think radio personalities have complete control over what’s played on-air and that we’re able to do whatever we want, but that’s not even close to true. Most radio stations have a Music Director who does all the chart research and puts together the music for each show. The host just walks in and handles the speaking part of things. Read more>>

Usually people aren’t aware of how much knowledge you need to be able to work on the nail industry, most people think that doing nails is easy and anyone watching YouTube can do it. But working on the nail industry is more that that, it implies to know about anatomy, chemistry, disinfection protocol, and health. You need to know the different products, how they work, what is best for each client, and what you can and can’t do on someone’s feet or hands. Doing nails is not just glue a tip and apply acrylic on top, or wash feet and apply color on toes. To do nails you have to be a professional and have the knowledge to do it properly. Read more>>
