One thing that I feel outsiders are unaware of, is the “behind the scenes”. Many people think you click a button and throw a filter on a photo and that’s that. However being a photographer and having a business is so much more than that. Many photographers do everything on their own. This includes advertising, communicating with prospective and contracted clients, designing and updating websites and social media platforms. I think the biggest misconceptions are around the amount of work it takes, and the vision and talent that you do have to have to be a professional photographer. As far as amount of work- its so much more than going to a session for an hour and taking the photos. That is honestly the easiest part of the gig. The fun part! Getting to play with a family full of fun kids for an hour is a dream but the “work” is for hours before and after the session. The life of a therapist can be really lonely. My job is to keep secrets, to care for the innermost parts of others, and to offer myself and expect nothing in return. Being a therapist for others creates real moments of connection with others, but they are not for me. I also can’t come home at the end of the day and “talk shop” with my family like others can. In some senses there is a whole part of my life that others can’t know and this makes it difficult to be fully known in my work.
