We had the good fortune of connecting with Jesse Jennings and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jesse, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work life balance often gets overlooked by business owners! When I first started working for myself I said Yes to any job which often meant working a lot on the weekends. You think to yourself, “oh I’ll just work this one weekend!” However that often turns to multiple weekends where you are working or thinking about work. Over time I’ve realized that work has its place. I am a Bible reader and the scripture at Philippians 1:10 really sticks with me, “to make sure of the more important things…” My family and quality time with them always should come first. It’s important as a parent to spend time with your kids as they grow up, especially being a small business owner. I have found that to my surprise many customers respect it when I tell them I can’t get to the job until later because I use the weekends to volunteer and spend time with my family. So for me balance is important. I think anyone looking to start their own business should first make some strict rules on when they will and won’t work and stick to them! That way you will feel accomplished after a successful work week, and still have time and energy to spend on yourself and your family!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Just getting into the Lawn-care and Handyman business, I have found that it’s a great time to be in this field. It used to be that you would have your next door neighbors kid mow your lawn for a couple bucks, or you would get your relative or dad to come fix something at your house; but it seems people and the community are realizing that it is worth it to pay for a professional and dependable company to handle that for you! It’s exciting to meet new customers, learn about them, and to show them that they can call a dependable person that will get things done exactly how they want it, and in a professional manner! It’s great taking care of someone’s lawn and noticing something about their house that needs fixed or having someone come up to you and say, “ I wish I could get this fixed or that replaced,” and to be able to say, “ Hey, I can do that too!” Sure there are challenges I run across every week, but now I start to look at them as ways to grow and to continue to show why it’s worth it to have Jesse with Pronghorn Property Care come out and take care of it for you!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Grand Junction, CO is a great place to be! For the outdoor enthusiast there is unlimited things to do. Mountain biking is huge with endless trails to ride around Palisade out to Fruita! If your an avid Disc Golfer again there are multiple courses that you can play. My favorite being along Los Colonias Park. You can then enjoy some brews at Kannah Creek, and even listen to great concerts at the amphitheater! Of course regular gold is a must too with amazing courses such as Redlands Mesa, Tiara Rado and Adobe Creek. Fruita, Palisade, And GJ have the best selection of eats! Warehouse 2565 is a favorite to dine at and listen to concerts! There really is no limit to what you can do!.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to my wife! She has move with me twice across country from CO to MT and back! She always supports my business and my decisions even if she doesn’t agree with them at the time! She is a great mother and wife, I could not be my own business owner without her!
