We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Egan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m a New England native originally hailing from central Connecticut. In retrospect, it’s conflicting to reflect and come to terms with the fact that the place you grew up never truly felt like home. I was fortunate enough to have a family that frequently traveled and spent time in the mountains of Vermont/New Hampshire, where I suspect my desire for greater adventures, natural beauty, scale, and grandeur was first planted. Without siblings I was accustomed to spending a good deal of time alone, often letting my imagination take over. Creativity always felt like an escape – a way to forge my own path and to set myself apart in a family consistenting primarily of businessmen/women and engineers. Something was always intriguing about visual arts, as I immersed myself over time in drawing, painting, pottery, ceramics, photography, dance, and digital design. Traditonal sports, hobbies, etc had truthfully made me always feel like an outkast within the society and structure that I was raised within. These alternative mediums were the only languages I knew how to speak, in order to find myself.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My love for photography started in highschool. I would play with some cameras found around the house, either small point & shoots or disposibles. But after taking an in-depth course at school, I became infatuated with the process of it all. Developing negatives in the darkroom, experimenting with different analog cameras, finding friends who were willing to be subjects. Ideating interesting and unique images started to develop into a passion. Although I very much consider myself an amateur with all of us being life-long students, I’ve progressed my skills by: seeking inspiration inside and out, trial and error, sourcing quality equipment, learning about photography’s history, and asking questions from those whose work I found respect for.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend was in town this summer! And although we have some widely varying interests, in an ideal world I would have loved to take her skiing – either resort or backcountry, just so she could experience the perspective of these incredible mountains that I’m lucky enough to. In the real world, as she is very much a ‘city girl’, I was just as elated to show her around my new home. Drinks at Pon Pon (my favorite bar in Denver), a sunset stroll around Red Rocks, brunch and shopping around Pearl Street in Boulder (get Bloodys at The Kitchen!), a live concert at one of many incredible venues in town (this instance was Mission Ballroom), a live sporting event (either at Coors Field, Ball Arena, or Empower Field), and an afternoon at Meow Wolf is a guaranteed agenda for some fun, quality friend time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without question, this would be dedicated to my mom and dad. They’ve supported me every step of the way throughout my journey, and have always been my biggest cheerleaders no matter how big or small the dream.
