We had the good fortune of connecting with AJ Blu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi AJ, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Choosing an artistic career music specifically just seemed natural to me because it’s always been around me. My older brothers all used to rap and write music, music always played in my house, and I always liked to learn and recite the lyrics since a very young age so music has always just played a huge role in my life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started to take music seriously around the time I was 13 years old. I’ve always been a huge Hip-Hop fan and always had innate gifts when it came to writing and rhyming so around that time I decided to take it upon myself and get serious about it because I knew it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I think what sets my art apart from others is my originality and me really being a student of the game, I have real respect for the culture of Hip-Hop and the art of emceeing and I never just wanted to be any ordinary emcee I’ve always strived to be the BEST emcee. I’m honestly most excited about my development lyrically and vocally from when I first started I always knew I had great potential but actually starting to reach it feels incredible and I really feel like I’m only beginning to scratch the surface. Honestly I get where I am today from a lot of trial and error, taking risk, stepping outside my comfort zone, And having an amazing support system it definitely wasn’t easy but overcoming every obstacle brought me closer to my goal. Every challenge I had I’ve overcome by just being persistent and understanding and again having great people in my corner to encourage and advise me. Some lessons I’ve learned a long the way are consistency is key, proper preparation prevent poor performance, and patience goes a long way. As far as my label and I go I just want the world to know that we’re just like normal guys, hard working, not from wealth but all decided to chase our dreams with everything we have so we can become something much more than what the world has allotted us.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m really big on Asian Cuisine and I live in Denver so I’d definitely take them to my favorite sushi spot Sushi Katsu. Not really a huge drinker or big on not life (I know not typical for a rapper) but I lot of people hit downtown Denver and go to view house and a bunch of other bars and clubs down there to drink and have a good time. 16th street mall is always a cool spot to hit up and walk along, plenty of cool shops to go to and see and of course we have the Rocky Mountains! Estes park is a favorite vacation spot of my girlfriend and I so I would definitely recommend that as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I honestly have so many amazing people to Thank that I know I wouldn’t be here without, but naming them all would take all day so I’ll just give you the condensed version this time. I of course would love to give a huge shout out to my amazing mother who instilled so many incredible values in me, my brothers best friends and label mates Max Venus, JaSew, and Meshi because without them I just don’t know where I’d be and my amazing Girlfriend for holding me down through this crazy journey.
