We had the good fortune of connecting with Chloe Rogozinski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chloe, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for Reef Healers was born from a combination of personal passion and environmental concern. In 2022, scuba diving exposed my business partner Austin Niles and me to the fascinating world of marine life. Even though we have always loved our beach vacations, our visits to the ocean were limited due to living in Colorado. However, as we deepened our diving experience, our appreciation for the ocean and its ecosystems grew.
During our certification process, we learned about the threats facing marine environments, particularly coral reefs. This awareness sparked a crucial question: ‘What can we do from Colorado to support ocean health?’ Surprisingly, we discovered that Colorado ranks among the top three states in the U.S. for the number of certified scuba divers per capita—a fact that highlighted a unique opportunity for advocacy within inland communities.
We launched Reef Healers in February 2023 after learning that an astonishing 80% of marine pollution originates from inland sources, often carried to the oceans via rivers. This was a revelation that shaped our mission: to grow a sustainable revenue stream that expands ocean conservation efforts from rivers to reefs. fostering community connections through impactful and educational events that emphasize how actions made upstream ultimately affect everyone else downstream. Through Reef Healers, we aim to demonstrate the critical importance of healthy oceans, not just for coastal populations but for everyone, everywhere.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My experience with Reef Healers combines a strong entrepreneurial spirit with rigorous academics. I’ve been studying ecology and sustainable practices at Colorado State University, where I’m now finishing up my degree in Ecosystem Science and Sustainability. In addition, I have several hours of practical restoration experience under my belt and am certified in coral restoration, which has greatly influenced my approach to conservation. My work and passion focus on the interconnectedness of inland and marine ecosystems, promoting sustainable practices that benefit both.
Starting Reef Healers was challenging, but my academic background and practical experiences provided a solid foundation. The main challenge was engaging inland communities with marine conservation, a concept we made relevant by linking local actions to global ocean health. Through community engagement and an evidence-based approach, we’ve built a movement that empowers individuals far from coastlines to contribute to ocean conservation.
I’ve learned that combining community involvement with a strong scientific foundation is key to overcoming obstacles. My goal is to continue advancing our understanding and conservation of marine environments, demonstrating that every small action contributes to global sustainability. I want the world to recognize Reef Healers as a pioneering initiative showing how inland actions impact ocean health, and that everyone, regardless of location, can play a part in preserving our planet.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When friends visit us in Fort Collins, we love showing them the unique beauty and lively culture that defines our cute college town. We often start with a trip to the Cache la Poudre River or Horsetooth Reservoir—two of Fort Collins’ most beautiful natural spots, perfect for a day of hiking, kayaking, or just relaxing by the water. After enjoying the great outdoors, we head to Old Town, the heart of Fort Collins, where we stroll through the boutique shops and vibrant squares. A tour of New Belgium Brewing is a must-do when in the area to learn about craft beer production and sample some local brews. We typically end the experience with a meal at Rare Italian, where the ambiance and Italian food make for a perfect ending to a day of exploring. Each visit is a chance to share the places we love and the activities that make Fort Collins a special place to live and visit.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely, there are several pivotal supporters who deserve recognition in our journey with Reef Healers. First and foremost, I want to highlight EforAll Colorado. We had the incredible opportunity to participate in their 2024 Winter Business Accelerator Program, which was a game-changer for us. The guidance, resources, and support from EforAll and their vibrant community of entrepreneurs have been instrumental. They’ve not only accelerated our progress but have truly enabled us to refine our mission and outreach strategies effectively. Without them, Reef Healers wouldn’t be where it is today.
Additionally, I must acknowledge the broader Colorado conservation community and the local scuba diving enthusiasts. Their passion for environmental protection and ocean health has been a constant source of inspiration and motivation. They’ve helped us connect our inland conservation efforts to global ocean health in tangible ways, reinforcing that every small effort counts.
Together, these communities have not only supported our logistical and operational needs but have also been a constant source of encouragement and inspiration. Their belief in our mission fuels our daily efforts to make a significant impact on ocean conservation.
